I too am stuck on this. I need to enter the total pmts for tax year 2021 for CO. Does that mean I download my 2021 return or my 2020? Moreover, where do I find these numbers and how do I get the correct answer if I have social security benefits on my 1040?

Hi! I'm trying to finish up my taxes but I keep getting sent back to a page that says "Carryover worksheet: Total withheld/pmts must be entered. We still need to know your total payments and withholdings for your 2020 CA tax return..." and I tried looking it up but I can't seem to get a proper answer. Please help. Thanks!

Because you need to obtain your 2020 CA tax payments/withholding amounts, see if you can access your 2020 return for that information. Here are the steps to follow to access your 2020 return. These steps assume you used TurboTax Online for tax year 2020. If you used the TurboTax CD/Download versions, then your 2020 return would not be saved on TurboTax servers. In such circumstances, you would need to review your own computer files to access your 2020 return.

Sign into your TurboTax account (if not already)

Click on My TurboTax (click on My Tax Timeline in the drop down menu)

Scroll down where is says "Prior Year Return(s)" click on Load My Tax Timeline

On the Tax Timeline screen, click the tax year you need

On the right side, select Download/print return (PDF) (if you just need a printout)

Per the screenshot I just attached, it is asking for total payments and withholding for my 2020 CA tax return.

Per your response, you mentioned the answer is in line 25 of the 2020 1040 form? Since There are no 1099s, it would just be 25a correct? And this would have to match line2 of the 2020 W2, correct?

The question is actually asking about state and local taxes paid for tax year 2020. When you download/print your 2020 return be sure to include all forms/worksheets. You should look for Schedule A line 5a and/or the "State and local tax deduction worksheet" which will show the Schedule A line 5a amount broken down into withholding/estimated paid/paid with extension to CA categories.

I'm also stuck on the "Total withheld/pmts" section.

I didn't have W-2's as I was unemployed. In my 2020 state return I go to Schedule A (1040) "Itemized deductions" and in "Taxes you paid" in 5a I have no amount as I had no W2 income. Does that mean that my Total withheld/payments where $0 because I was not working?

I do see 5b for State and local real estate taxes, 5c state and local personal property taxes.

Thanks

We'd love to help you complete your tax return, but need more information. Can you please clarify your question? I do not fully understand your question.

However, if you need total payments for 2021 CO then you need to download the 2021 tax return. See the screenshot below from the 2021 Colorado tax return. Line 17 is total Colorado Tax for 2021.

I hope this is helpful. If you need additional information please come back to the forum.

Still clear as mud. I assume I should enter "0" for Total Withheld/Pmts. Turbo Tax is directing me to fill in the Total Withheld/Pmts for the 2021 State Tax Refund Information Line. We overpaid as shown in (f), so why does it as for Total Withheld/Pmts in (d) (first screenshot). I did go and look at the fields in last years tax and they are blank (second screenshot). And line 17 from last years CO state tax file is blank (third screenshot). See Screenshots below.

Zero is not the right answer. If you didn't pay anything in there would be nothing to refund. In your prior year return copy download or print you should find a W2 summary worksheet and/or Tax Payments Worksheet or even look at you prior year W2 that should show the withholding W2 box 17 for CO.

Sorry I am bit more confused....I live in NJ and work in NY, as a result, I got taxed in NY and only a little to NJ for year 2022, below is the screenshot of the question, and what I have entered is the Form 1040 row 25a -

and I already filled this, cannot go back as once it was filled the "check this entry" page was nowhere to be found, did I enter it wrong or have to correct it?

my W2 tax return -

Since you work in New York, it's possible you had no New Jersey State Tax Withheld in 2022, so $0 could be the correct entry, unless you had NJ tax withheld on other income documents (1099's).

A Carryover amount usually applies to an amount that was not able to be used in the prior year, so is carried into the current tax year. This usually doesn't apply to most people. If you get Review errors for the Federal Carryover Worksheet, you could Delete the worksheet from your return, and that may resolve the issue.

In most cases, TurboTax will fill in any Carryover amounts from the prior year return for you.
