Yes, with TurboTax Easy Extension. It's the fast, easy, and secure way to e-file your federal tax extension.

Anyone can use Easy Extension, even if you don't plan on finishing up with TurboTax. This free service is available to anyone with a U.S. or APO/FPO/DPO address. Get started here.

Your extension needs to be e-filed before midnight April 15, 2019 (April 17, 2019 if you live in Maine (ME) or Massachusetts (MA) due to Emancipation Day). In the unlikely event of a rejection, you have until April 20, 2019 (April 22, 2019 for ME and MA) to either resubmit or mail your extension request.

Once your e-filed extension has been accepted, you can file your IRS return anytime before midnight, October 15, 2019.

Note: Filing an extension does not give you additional time to pay owed taxes, which are due April 15, 2019 (April 17, 2019 if you live in Maine (ME) or Massachusetts (MA)) (June 15 for taxpayers out of the country). If you can't pay owed tax by the deadline, always file an extension so you can avoid the late-filing penalty, which is up to 10 times higher than the late-payment penalty.

So I am not able to file it electronically using the downloaded Turbo Tax on my computer already? I've got in 99% of the information, I am just waiting for one form. I need to make a payment. When I try to file an extension, it makes me print it out and mail it in. I bought Turbo Tax so I wouldn't have to mail anything in. Can I do it electronically within the TurboTax software?

Right but you can use Easy Extension.

Extensions form your computer must be printed and mailed. Or use the online "Easy Extension".

@doc Denver Go to this TurboTax website to e-file an extension request - https://turbotax.intuit.com/irs-tax-extensions/

Note that the extension is only for filing the tax return. If you have taxes owed they have to be paid on or before April 18, 2023 to avoid a failure to pay penalty.

Thanks! it's a bit frustrating I can't just do it all in the software in one place. I ended up making a payment at IRS Direct Pay, clicked on the link in the Help section. It was super-easy.
