system will not let me type in a partnership gain on line 10 of form 4797

If you are using Turbo Tax software, go to the forms mode>select open form>type in 4797. Now select enterable 4797 Sales of business property (page 2). Scroll down to part 3 to make your entry. This assuming this is a gain from a sale of a partnership interest.

If you are using the online version, you will not be able to enter this directly on a 4797. Here you will have to go to federal>wages and income>business items>sales of business property to record this. This will generate a 4797 with an entry on line 10.
