If your 1099-R has an amount for State Tax Withheld in Box 14, and you were a full-year resident of New York, the Gross Distribution amount should be in Box 16.

Go back to your 1099-R entry in your Federal return and EDIT to add this amount to Box 16. If there is no 'State Payer ID' in Box 15, you can use the Federal Payor ID.

You can type '1099-R' in the Search area, then click on 'Jump to 1099-R' to get there.

Box 14a For electronic filing, New York State withholdings can not be greater than or equal to gross distribution or state distribution.

I have a value in box 14a, and no number in box 16. What should I do to fix the "error?"

This is for 2022 Tax year.

Changing the 1099-R entries does not correct the problem for New York State. Entering the box 16 with the box 14 amount does not fix the error in TURBOTAX. Restarting the application does not change the error condition. When will there be a fix? Problem has existed in the product for several years.

I have the same problem. TurboTax says New York State withholding cannot be greater than or equal to gross distribution or state distribution. Note: It says Gross distribution OR State distribution (Not AND). My withholding is less than gross distribution. So I shouldn't be getting this error. Turbo tax needs to fix this problem.

I didn't have this error until after I paid. I completed my return. Did the Federal review and everything checked okay. After I paid for TurboTax the error came up. To double check this error I created another TurboTax account using a different email address. I put the same 1099R information into TurboTax. Performed the federal check and No Errors. Turbo Tax Please Fix this problem.
