My 8949 has an entry that it has an attachment. I cannot find any attachment in the tax file. I cannot fill out the Form 8453 to send in the additional documents received from the broker to support the entries on the form 8949. How do I do this?

The attachment is the statement from your broker. It's not something that TurboTax creates. TurboTax will create Form 8453 when you go through the filing section and select that you want to e-file your tax return. If you file by mail instead of e-filing you do not need Form 8453. You just attach a copy of the brokerage statement to your mail-filed tax return.

I'm confused. I received distributions from two trusts and partially liquidated those distributions. Do I file an 8453 along with the statements from the trustees? I e-filed my federal forms.

If you e-filed and TurboTax noted that you need to send in attachments, then you would print the form 8453 and mail it in with the requested attachments.

Thanks Mark. What's confusing is whether I send the 8453 and the 1099B, or the 8453 and form 8949. Form 8453 says to send in a form 8949. I'm happy to send the consolidated 1099 and 8949. I'd just like some guidance.

Thanks!

Steve

@sbsnyder001 You send Form 8543 with a copy of the brokerage statement (1099-B) attached, showing the details of the transactions. The idea is that the brokerage statement contains all the details that would be on Form 8949 if you entered all the transactions separately on that form. But the whole point of this procedure is to avoid having to enter every transaction on Form 8949.

Got it. I read the 8453 more closely and saw that I can file the statement. My final (I hope) question is can I file the 1099B summary sheet, which lists the ST/LT covered/noncovered totals, or do I have to submit the 21 sheets that list each sale?

Thanks again.

Steve
