The reason stated why I now owe money is that there weren't enough taxes taken out relative to my income. But I started the job in late august. How does that make sense?

Yes, obviously not enough taxes were taken out this year relative to my income because I only started making that much money in late august. It seems like I now owe money for no reason. Is there something I'm missing, or is this just how it works?

No one here can see your tax return. We do not know how much income you entered or how much tax was withheld. If you had self-employment income earned as an independent contractor you owe self-employment tax for Social Security and Medicare. Or did you receive a W-2? If you have a W-2, what is in box 1? Box 2?

as time goes by you can learn to adjust the W-4 you give your employer.

you can file a new W-4 at any time.
