The first solution is to find your tax return from 2021. A refund is on line 35a, and the amount you owe is on line 37.

If you used TurboTax last year, please follow this link: How do I access my prior-year return in TurboTax Online or in the mobile app?

The only way you can obtain copies of your tax return from the IRS is by filing Form 4506 with the IRS. You can download this form from the IRS website. IRS Form 4506

Follow this link for additional guidance How to Obtain a Copy of Your Tax Return

Thank you JohnB5677. To clarify, would having no tax liability mean that line 37 is 0, or just less then line 35a?

Form 1099 doesn't report tax liability, only income from various sources. Some income reported on a 1099 ends up having no tax due. But the entity that sent the 1099 doesn't know that. You need to look on your tax return to find out what amount was taxable.

Your tax liability appears on Form 1040, as others have explained in this thread.
