If box 15, State Employer ID, is blank on your W-2, your e-file return should still go through just fine, as long as there are no other errors on your return. Your state department of revenue will be able to easily identify your employer from their 9-digit federal EIN, so the state ID number is a little redundant anyway, but is still a way that your state tracks employers in their internal state computer system.

If you are receiving an error for box 15, try using the federal ID in that box or if the state requires a particular format, such as ending in XYZ, then enter 99999999XYZ for the number of digits it specifies. In Utah, there should be 11 numerals followed by WTH (in capitols) with no dash.

If the error persists , try deleting the form and reentering it. If you have "copied and pasted" to enter some of the information, it might have spaces or other invisible formatting characters that are causing the errors. Please be sure there are no extra spaces before the entries or after the entries. If you have imported into Turbo Tax, perhaps some of the data was damaged in the transfer and is not working properly, even if it looks correct on the page. Deleting the W-2 and manually entering it should solve the problem.

1. Box 15 is not blank, it has my companies state ID number in it on my W2.

2. My return is for the sate of MN not Utah, this comment appears to be copied from a previous post from 2021.

3. I deleted the W2 info and reentered it without copying and pasting, no changes to the result. Once again this is copied from a 2021 post.

Can I get some current help so i can efile? TurboTax won't allow me to efile with these errors saying this "will cause a efile reject".

Try not entering anything in Box 15 and see what happens. Another possibility might be to enter the same ein # like the federal followed by wth in small caps rather than larges caps. Deleting the w2 original input and reentering it most always works. If all doesn't help, see HERE for some other possible solutions.

Seeing exact same problem. TT copies info over from Federal return and includes MN in the employer's state ID #, when it should only copy the number. That causes field to be too long and truncate actual number. TT then rejects it because it isn't 7 digits and won't let you file. There is no way to change it because TT copies it from W-2, won't let you fill it out manually.

As per @AbrahamT above, try deleting your Form W-2 and reenter it, leaving that number blank.

Make sure that the proper state is selected for Box 15.

If a specific number of digits is required, try shortening your number to that format.

To delete a W-2 entry:

Open your return in TurboTax.
(To do this, sign in to TurboTax and click the blue Take me to my return button.)
Using the search feature in the upper right, search for "w-2" (lower case, with or without the dash) and then click the "Jump to" link in the search results.
A W-2 screen will open. On this screen you can delete the W-2 entry

To manually enter your W-2 info:

From Tax Home, open or continue your return.
In the search bar, search for W-2.
Select the Jump to link at the top of the search results.
At We'll start with your W-2, select Work on my W-2 and Continue.
- If you land on the Here’s your W-2 info screen, select Add another W-2.
Leave the employer ID section blank and Continue.
Select Type it in myself and Continue.
Follow the instructions to manually enter your W-2 info.

This should enable you to bypass the issue and file your return.

I'm seeing the same issue while working on my state return. This could be a problem caused by Paylocity (our payroll company) because I see the same thing on both of my W-2s.

I can verify that when the W-2 is imported, it begins the employer's state ID number in Box 15 with the first 3 characters "MN ". If you open the VIEW tab from the Menu bar, you can then open FORMS and finally open the particular W-2 and see that TurboTax has broken Box 15 into two separate boxes (both labeled 15), one expecting the state abbreviation and the second looking only for a seven digit number. Unfortunately, as it imports, it fills the first Box 15 with the correct state abbreviation, but includes that same abbreviation and a space before the seven digit number in the second box.

You can correct this by going to Forms on the Menu bar and opening the problematic W-2 there. You can click and remove the "MN " from the second box 15; when you close the form it will have saved that change. Changing it in this way will propagate the correction through to the state forms as well.
