Retailers such as Amazon, Walmart Costco, Sam's club, etc. may sell Turbotax at a discounted price from Intuit price.

Currently, the cost of the CD/Download is discounted. Keep in mind there is a fee to e-fled the state with the CD/Download. E-file your state returns for only ~~$25~~$20 per state return. The price is based on the date on which you e-file and is subject to change without notice.

And if you buy the Desktop CD/Download program you can buy a lower version. All the Desktop programs have the same forms. You just get more help and guidance in the higher versions. But you need Deluxe or higher to get a free state PROGRAM download.

You can move your Online file to the Desktop program and continue without paying for Online or needing to reenter your info. If you already paid for the Online version you can ask them for the Desktop program. And you can buy a lower version Desktop program. All the Desktop programs have the same forms. You just get more help and guidance in the higher versions.

How do I save my TurboTax Online return as a tax data file?

After you get the program installed the first thing to do before you open your tax return .tax file is to update the program and install any state programs you had. Then open your file. So you first might need to start a fake return to be able to download the state program (go to FILE - NEW). Just enter some basic personal info like your name and address then click on the State tab at the top and it should ask if you want to download the state program.

Probably. However, make sure that you buy from a legitimate brand-name retailer. In the past, there have been super discount website selling pirated copies with activation codes that don’t always work.

Next, make sure that you buy deluxe federal plus state edition. Some retailers sell a federal only version and you want to make sure you get the state included.

Lastly, even if you buy the federal plus state addition, you will be charged an extra $25 to e-file your state return. You can mail the state return for free if you prefer. This morning, I noticed that deluxe federal plus state was $45 on Amazon, so with the state e-filing fee, the total cost would be $70.
