I have a $3K contribution to my family HSA for the all of 2022, worked the whole year with no changes so assuming no issue here. This figure is on my W2 box 12 value W. My 1099 SA Box 1 has a distribution of $2500. Turbo tax says I have an HSA Excess Contribution of $3K. Can that be correct? Please help me understand if that's the case.

Thanks!

You likely don't have an excess HSA contribution. To remedy your situation, you need to go to the Deductions and Credits section in TurboTax and flind the Medical section and look for 1099-SA, HSA, MSA and complete that section. Most likely, you have a problem with the answers to the questions regarding what type of plan you have and what contributions or distributions were made that involve it.

did you enter the contributions as if you made them - they would appear on line 2 of form 8889? that's wrong what happens is your taxable wages (box 1 of W-2) are reduced by the $3K you contributed that's where you get the deduction. coded as 12w, they show up on line 9 of the form which is proper. I am confused about the excess since if you had a family HDHP all year the max is $7300 unless one of you also had non-HDHP or medicare coverage. another possibility is that you didn't check self-only or family coverage under a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) - which makes you ineligible for an HSA contribution.
