I’m newly married. I own several properties and owe taxes every year. My spouse works and receive a refund every year. Should we file married or separately?

Hello there,

In general it is better to file married filing jointly, but there are some circumstances when it makes sense to file separately. You have to consider your overall tax situation and consider several things and you have not given us enough information to get to a conclusion. For example, it is not clear if either of you already have children, get education benefits, or qualify for the earned income credit etc.

Therefore i am attaching the following resources with additional information for you to consider:

https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/taxation/better-married-couple-file-jointly-separately/L338QHg8G_US_en_US

https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-filing-status/compare-married-filing-jointly-married-filing/L6CJYiJ1S_US_en_US

In the end, you may have to consider using the What-if analysis tool in the TurboTax desktop program or just prepare three test tax returns to see which option works better for your specific tax situation.
