Hi loglady,

Depending on which state(s) you worked remotely in and for how long, you may need to pay income tax in more than one state. Each state has different guidelines, so it's important to look at individual state rules to determine if you need to file for that state this year. If you do have a filing requirement then you would file two part-year state returns.

How does working remotely affect my state taxes?

To avoid this from happening in the future you will need to update your state tax forms with your employer according to where you live and work.

Best regards,

I moved to a new state mid-way through last year, but kept working remotely in the first state. I filed my taxes through Turbo Tax, and based on that should have gotten a portion of my state return back from the first state and pay some to the new state. I paid the new state, but the first state sent me a revision letter and didn't give anything back. I definitely believe I overpaid, but haven't been able to get someone from the state #1 tax office on the phone to fix things. How do I fix this, and how do I make sure it doesn't happen again this year?
