My 1098 did not list my points but I got them from a settlement statement. TurboTax seems to ask this question two times which is confusing. There is the initial step where is ask total points and the term. Later this is a question for points not on the 1098.

You should only report the points once. In this case, I suggest you use the latter, which is ""not on form 1098".

In my opinion, it is listed that way for clarity because IRS has form 1098 information and if you include the points in that section and it is not on the Form 1098, it will generate an error because it does not match.
