The IRS cares about who the child lived with. If the child lived with you more than 183 nights during the tax year then you may be able to claim the child as a dependent. But you have provided little information. Is the child your grandchild or is the child related to you in some way? Or is it some other situation? Please provide some details.

The child (my gf son) lives with me. She went on cashaid, but I still provide everything for the child.

@r98des So this is not your own child? Unless the child lived with you for the entire tax year---and you mentioned seven months above---you cannot claim the child as a dependent.

And...you did not ask, but if the child's parent did not work in 2022 then she is not eligible for any child-related credits for a 2022 tax return. For 2022, she can only get child-related credits like earned income credit or child tax credit if she worked.
