I've used Block's product for many years but decided it's time to change.

I have various documents. Assuming I switch to TurboTax 22, should I import *Tax Return.T21 or the similarly named PDF?

Also, I assume the capital gains files created in 2022 in Quicken will import nominally.

The PDF needs to be your 1040 or 1040-SR
The program accepts PDFs from a range of providers, such as HR Block, Credit Karma, TaxAct, ezTaxReturn, TaxSlayer, or Liberty Tax/Tax Brain

How do I import QuickBooks into the TurboTax CD/Download for Windows?

TurboTax for Windows Basic, Deluxe, Premier, and Home & Business versions can import directly from the QuickBooks Desktop software.

Before you begin

Make sure the QuickBooks software (downloadable or CD) is installed on your computer, along with TurboTax.
Your QuickBooks data file should be saved to your local drive, not on the network or cloud.
Make sure you've finished entering the tax year's financial info in QuickBooks, and that you've assigned tax lines to your accounts.
During the import, leave QuickBooks is running and keep your QuickBooks data file open.

How to import

Open (continue) your tax return in TurboTax.
From the TurboTax File menu in the upper-left corner, select Import > From Accounting Software.
- If you're importing from both Quicken and QuickBooks, import from QuickBooks first.
Select QuickBooks, click Continue, and follow the onscreen instructions.

If I were to import the PDF of last year's return, what info does it not import compared to importing the *.T21 file? Wouldn't it make more sense to import the tax file instead of the PDF?

Almost nothing transfers from a PDF ... best to use the .tax file if you can... read the FAQs ...

You asked about Quicken but the answer was for QuickBooks. Here's info on Quicken

You can only import Quicken into the Windows Desktop program.

You can only import Quicken directly into the Turbo Tax Windows Desktop program and not to the Online version. If you need to transfer Quicken to Turbo Tax for Mac or to older Windows tax returns you need to export your Quicken data as a txf file. (Neither TurboTax Online nor TurboTax Business supports imports from the .txf file.)

Here's some more info on Transferring from 2021.

What Turbo Tax version are you planning to use? Turbo Tax Online version or the Desktop CD/Download program? TurboTax Online and the Mac Desktop program only supports PDF transfers, if you used other tax software last year.

You can try to transfer the actual data file from H R Block or TaxAct into the Windows Desktop program. See

To Transfer from the PDF……
You need to have the actual electronic pdf file not a printed or scanned copy. But a pdf only transfer very basic info like your name and AGI. It would be just as easy to manually enter all your info. So it's probably not worth even trying to transfer it.

Has anyone actually done the PDF transfer from HRBLOCK 2021 into Turbo Tax Deluxe desktop 2022?

I'm new to Turbo Tax. Did the transfer from HRBLOCK, and my last year's AGI came out wrong. Instead of $50,000, it was $1,150,000. The AGI line from 2021 is line # 11, so it seems like it's taking the line # and adding that into the amount. That will prevent me from e-filing if not corrected. That's the first thing I see so who knows what else is wrong. Not a comfortable feeling when using software for the first time.

Any suggestions?

Transferring from a PDF file is a waste of time and is usually inaccurate. You can simply enter the info yourself manually in 1/2 the time it takes you to transfer it.
