Using Turbo Tax 2022 for estimating Taxes, seems pretty good except that form 8962, the Premium Tax Credit, I think is very wrong.

If you go above the 400% poverty line it seems TurboTax 2022 wants to tell you you have to pay back all the subsidies from the year. I think the cliff was eliminated 2 years ago and is still gone till 2025. Is this just a bug that you are going to fix? or was there a change of some kind in the tax code and we have to concern ourselves with that?

The early releases of the software are just a rough draft. There will be a number of updates over the next month or two. According to the federal forms availability list, Form 8962 is currently expected to be available in TurboTax on January 19. (That date is subject to change.) Until it's officially available, it might not work correctly and cannot be relied on.

I'm dealing with the same issue - I think it's as simple as TurboTax is not transferring the values from the 1095A form line 33a and line 33b to the form 8962 line 11. And, it doesn't seem that you can override these fields. Am I seeing this wrong, TurboTax can you fix this so I can estimate my taxes before the end of the year!?

8962 is there now, as I mentioned in a reply to the main post, I think the problem is TurboTax not transferring values from form 1095 line 33 to form 8962 line 11

:), I'm calling it a bug as I think the problem is TurboTax not transferring values from form 1095a line 33 to form 8962 line 11 - and it's not allowing an override

Ok ... just be smarter than the program ... simply look at the form 1040 line 17 ( amount from Sch 2 line 2) and remove that amount from that line and then recalculate the bottom line.

Appreciate the engagement, yes I can be "smarter than the program" by not using it:)! Unfortunately what you suggest doesn't fix the problem, it's just removes the re-payment of the premium credit. What's needed is the calculation that one would get from 8962

Since the cliff was removed the form 8962 is basically useless and the repayment will not be required ... ignoring that form is what you need to do at this time until the form is fully functional in the program sometime in January. This is a valid workaround for estimation purposes.

Of course you can also use the 2021 program to do 2022 estimates ...

This is my mini version of a tutorial that should be in the downloaded program:

What is Forms Mode?

Forms Mode lets you view and make changes to your tax forms "behind the scenes."

If you're adventurous, you can even prepare your return in Forms Mode, but we don't recommend it. You may miss obscure credits and deductions you qualify for, and you may forget to report things that will come back and haunt you later.

Forms Mode is exclusively available in the TurboTax CD/Download software. It is not available in TurboTax Online.

Related Information:

Why would I use Forms Mode?

How do I switch to Forms Mode in the TurboTax for Windows software?

How do I switch to Forms Mode in the TurboTax for Mac software?

What is-the-meaning-of-all-the-different-colors-in-forms-mode

How to delete a form

If you want to play around with different figures and tax scenarios without affecting your original return you can ….

>>>In the TurboTax CD/Download software by creating a test copy:

1. Open your return in TurboTax.

2. From the File menu, choose Save As.

3. Give the copy a new name to distinguish it from the original (for example, by adding "Test" or "Example" to the file name).

4. Click Save. You are now safely working in the test copy and anything you do here will not affect the original.

https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1900642-how-to-make-a-test-copy-of-your-return

>> use the WHAT IF tool:

- Click Forms Icon (upper right of screen) or Ctrl 2 (forms view)

- Click on the Open Form Icon

- In the “Type a form name.” area type What-If (with the dash), click on the name of the worksheet - click on Open Form

- You will see the worksheet on the right side of the screen; enter the information right into the form

- To get back to interview mode - click on the Step-by-Step Icon (upper right of screen) or Ctrl 1

Once you have filed successfully … you can shut off the auto updater function and then save the return & .taxfile.

For Windows, up in the top menu, you can set the "Updater Preferences" to "Always Ask" or more commonly set to "I don't have an internet connection" (even if you do), and then you are not forced to update....and can manually force an update when you choose to do so. And then you can open the file(s) at any time with no forced upgrade.

But that's the Windows software.....not a MAC. For a MAC you cannot turn off the auto updater HOWEVER you can simply disconnect from the internet before opening the tax return.

It's always a good idea to make a backup copy of your tax data file, in case your original gets lost or corrupted. Here's how:

From the File menu in the upper-left corner of TurboTax, choose Save As (Windows) or Save (Mac).

Browse to where you want to save your backup.

Tip: If you're saving to a portable device, save it to your computer first to prevent data corruption. Then, after completing Step 4, copy or move the backup file to your device.

In the File name field, enter a name that will distinguish it from the original tax file (for example, add "Backup" or "Copy" to the file name)

Click Save and then close TurboTax.

Restart TurboTax and open the backup copy to make sure it's not corrupted. If you get an error, delete the backup and repeat these steps.

If you make changes to your original tax return file, repeat these steps to ensure your original and backup copies are in-synch.

Related Information:

Retrieve a Tax File from a Portable Device

What's the difference between the tax data file and the PDF file?

AND save it as a PDF so you have access to a copy even if you don’t have the program still installed and operational :

How do I save my return as a PDF in the TurboTax software for Windows?

How do I save my return as a PDF in the TurboTax software for Mac?

AND protect the files :

How can I protect the tax files on my computer?

*** Other clues to the downloaded program ***

In the forms mode ... double click or right click on a box on a form to data source it ... sadly it doesn't work on all boxes.

What's the meaning of all the different colors in Forms Mode?

When you look at an onscreen tax form using Forms Mode, you might wonder why one figure is blue and the one next to it is red or black.

These colors indicate the source of that data.

Color

Meaning

Blue

You entered this data, either in the interview or Forms Mode.

Black

The program entered this data or calculated this amount.

Red

This data has either been overridden or is invalid (for example, a ZIP code that doesn't exist).

Red italics

You marked this amount as estimated.

Black italics

The program calculated this amount from an amount you marked as estimated.

Purple

This information has supporting details.

Aquamarine

This data was transferred over from last year.

Green

This data was imported from Quicken or QuickBooks.

Yellow fields (Windows)

Yellow fields allow user input.

Yes, I've been doing all that for years now. TurboTax is pretty good for that but you have to be organized. The problem is when the laws change and you rather need the new version, buts it's good you put all that procedure out there.

The only thing we can do is wait for TurboTax to update their 2022 code to reflect the current law. This should be easy as it's already in their 2021 code.

I agree, I'm seeing the same thing, I've checked both the Mac and Windows version too. I called support, they didn't know but said they'd file a notice to have it looked at (whatever that means). I'd suggest others call support too

ESTIMATED date for the form was today however it could come in the update later today or be postponed to another day as it often happens. Since the IRS will not start processing returns until 1/23 you have time to wait for the fix to happen. Patience is a vitue and is necessary in all things tax related.

It appears Form 8962 may still not be correct in Turbo Tax. I updated Turbo Tax on 1/12/2023. However, it still appears numbers are not carried forward from the 1095-A form (Columns A & B) to Form 8962. Although my household income is greater than 401% of the poverty line, I should still qualify for the Premium Tax Credit per the IRS instructions for 2022.

Are others experiencing a similar issue?

Its Jan <STRIKE>19th</STRIKE> 12th 2023 (Edit: Sorry, its the 12th, but TurboTax has it as final today. I will wait a few hours. I need to do estimated taxes and this is a frustrating delay.) and the 8962 is STILL not calculating line 11 correctly. If you make over 400% of poverty level TurboTax 2022 thinks you have to pay all of the advance premium tax credit back. Using TurboTax 2021, the 8.5% of SLCSP is computed and then used to fill line 11 - block E. That figure is subtracted from the total annual premium amount and that difference is brought over to Schedule 2 line 2 as excess advance premium tax credit to be paid back. it is not the full amount of the annual premium. The subsidy cliff was eliminated until 2025. Come on TurboTax! This is still broken.
