topic Missed 2021 tax filing in Get your taxes done using TurboTax

Hello,

I used turbotax online to file 2021 tax returns and created 1040 form in April but due to some corrections I created amended 1040-R without submitting original 1040. I sent only the 1040-R in mail. So IRS never reviewed my tax return ( I got to know after contacting IRS). IRS said I need to refile my taxes but since the deadline is already passed I am not able to use turbotax online to file the return again.

my question is

1. Can I file tax return for 2021 along with 2022 next year using TurboTax?

2. Can I send 1040 and 1040-R in mail now to get my refunds?

which option is better and if there’s any other option?

Thanks

LP

1. Can I file tax return for 2021 along with 2022 next year using TurboTax? No ... each year is filed separately.

2. Can I send 1040 and 1040-R in mail now to get my refunds? First there is no 1040-R ... it is a 1099-R which is attached to the 1040 if it had any taxes withheld on it. And if you never filed the 2021 return you need to mail it in now. If you incorrectly amended the return in the online program last year then you can mail in an original 2021 return now ... download the PDF file and mail in the 1040 in the file (do NOT send the 1040X) plus any schedules or forms in the return.

To access your prior year online tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the User ID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/

Start the 2022 online tax return by entering some personal information then click on Tax Home on the left side of the screen.

On the Tax Home webpage -

Scroll down to the section Your tax returns & documents. Click on the Year and Click on Download/print return (PDF)

Re: Missed 2021 tax filing

There is no Form 1040R----it sounds like you sent in a 1040X ----which is the form for an amended return, but since you did not file your original return on Form 1040 that has created confusion. You have to print, sign and mail in your original Form 1040.

However----before you "amended" did you save the original tax return? If you did not save it, then it is gone and you have to start over. You need to prepare a Form 1040 and then print it, sign and date it, and mail it in. It cannot be e-filed.

And no, you cannot combine 2021 with your 2022 tax return. Each return is separate and must be prepared on the forms for the specific tax year. The tax laws are different for those tax years.

I think you are going to need help from customer support to sort out whether you saved your original Form 1040. If you did save it, here is how to finish preparing it and file it.

You will be able to access the return you started by using the exact same account and user ID that you used when you started it. But you can no longer use online software for any further changes.

Online tax preparation and e-filing for 2021returns is now permanently closed.

Now it is too late to use online software or to e-file. If you have any changes/corrections at all to make to your 2021 return, you now have to complete it using desktop software, which you must download to a full PC or Mac (not to a mobile device). Then you need to print, sign and mail it.

https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/2559403-how-do-i-finish-a-prior-year-return-that-i-started-in-turbotax-online

If you already paid for your online software you can ask customer support for a download of the desktop software.

They are available from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific time Monday-Friday.

https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1899263-what-is-the-turbotax-phone-number

If you are getting a refund, there is no penalty for filing late. If you owe tax due, then file and pay the amount due as shown on the Form 1040, but expect a bill later from the IRS for the penalty and interest you will owe. Only the IRS will calculate this—TurboTax will not calculate it.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
