the cd version of turbo tax allows 5 tax returns to be filed, does the online version allow 5 as well?

Online allows 5 BUT

For Online you must create an entirely separate userID account & password for each one filed...and pay the full software fees for each one filed (same price whether e-filed or mail-filed on paper).

Of course, if any of those accounts can use the "Free" version, those wouldn't be charged in that account.

....BUT #2, you have to carefully write down and maintain the account username and password for each one if you choose to go that route. (and some are surprised that a file that started in "Free" has to be upgraded to a pay version due to some detail in that tax situation that requires a higher paid version.)

Those Desktops Folks who move to the "Online" version are usually disappointed that there is no "Forms" mode with the Online software.

With online software you pay for each return. That means a fee for each federal return and a fee for each state return. If you have multiple returns to prepare, then the desktop software will be more cost effective. Or you could try the IRS Free File site if you have several simple returns to prepare.

@johnnyside - just to clarify, the CD permits five tax returned to be E-FILED per IRS limitations.

you can FILE an UNLIMITED number of returns; after the first 5, they must be paper filed.
