Why do I have to buy a package and have it mailed to me before I can file?

I used to be able to just file my taxes, and now for some reason I have to purchase a package and have it mailed to me. If I purchase the package, will I then be able to file?

What tax year ?

It is too late to use the online 2021 free version as it has been shut down for the change to the 2022 version. And you are too early for the 2022 online program which will be available sometime in early December HOWEVER efiling the 2022 return will not be allowed until the IRS opens the 2022 filing season mid January.

If you need to file 2021 or prior they only sell the download Desktop program so nothing is mailed to you. Oh, are you asking about 2022? The Online version has not opened yet. Check back in December. Don't buy the Desktop program if you want to use the Online version. They are not the same.
