Hello 9900! Thanks for participating in our event today.

You may still be able to claim your daughter as a dependent, but in a different way than you did when she was a minor. You can claim her as a qualifying relative, rather than as a qualifying child. The requirements for this are:

She earns less than $4300.

You provide more than half of her living expenses.

You will get less tax breaks than you did when she was younger. You may qualify for a Credit for Other Dependents, which is $500. Your daughter will not count for the earned income credit.

I hope this is helpful!

Just enter her under My Info and answer the questions. If she was on your last year return she should transfer over. You might have to answer a couple questions like what is her income and if she is a full time student. Turbo Tax will automatically give you the Other Dependent credit if she qualifies. See my screenshot on this one. It shows where it is checked on the 1040.

https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/file-with-turbotax/discussion/senior-in-high-school/00/2785443

Turbotax makes that easy. You enter her at the beginning of your tax return on the Personal Info Summary as always (if you used Turbotax last year, her info should already be there). The software will recognize from her birthdate that she is over 18, and will ask the appropriate questions about income and support to determine if she qualifies.

When you get to the Deductions and Credits page, under You and Your Family, you should see Child and Other Dependent Tax Credits. This is the same place you used to qualify for the Child Tax Credit, but will in this case calculate that you are eligible for the $500 Other Dependent Credit.
