Is it possible to file if your only income is from Social Security benefits? Yes.

To e-file all you would need to do is add $1 of interest income along with the Social Security income, so the tax return can be e-filed.

However, if you have no income other than Social Security there is no need to file a 2022 tax return next year.

Do they take any tax withholding out of your Social Security? If you only get SS you don't have to file a return except to get back any withholding taken out. Or if you are married and you file a Joint return or your spouse is filing a Married Filing Separate return.

You can always file a tax return, although if your only income is SS, it is non-taxable and there is usually no benefit to filing a return.

To e-file, you must have at least $1 of taxable income. You can create $1 of taxable interest income. The IRS knows about this trick and it won't cause you any problems or to owe any tax. You can file a zero income return by mail if you like, although there is little reason to do so.
