I am not able to figure out if 8606 is filed by HR block(downloaded tax software) for me for 2020 tax (as I formatted my laptop without backup) and when accessed IRS transcript online, it does not show for 8606.

I check my 1040(from IRS transcript) and I see IRA deduction as $0 (under Adjustment to Income) though I made 6k IRA contribution in May 2021(for 2020 tax).

Q: if a person has IRA contribution and it is non-deductible(as per the criteria). The amount shown under IRA DEDUCTION should be $0 or it should be $6k

You have the option of paying a fee and requesting a photocopy of your tax return, however, I'm not sure a photocopy exists for an e-filed return.

https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-form-4506

How to verify if your HRB tax return actually contained form 8606 is something you need to discuss with HRB.

The whole point of form 8606 is to document a non-deductible contribution to a traditional IRA. (It also documents a conversion to a Roth IRA or a withdrawal from a Roth IRA, but I don't think those are at issue here, correct?) Since the 8606 documents a non-deductible contribution, by definition there is no tax deduction for the contribution anywhere on form 1040. (A deductible IRA contribution would be reported on schedule 1, line 20, but a non-deductible contribution is only reported on form 8606.)

I created account on IRS to get the 2020 transcripts.
I talked to HRB and they cant help as all of the docs are with me(and I should have taken backup) for downloaded software(offline) they dont have my details.

I am calling IRS since yesterday. hope they can help me. but not able to get hold of them
I am going to check form-4506 now if it can give me for e-file

I focused on this number form 8606, from my last thread where you guys guided me on what/how to do t-IRA to r-IRA (yes, you are correct I never did any conversion of any kind)

or should I pay 2*$50, and send separate 8606 to IRS (its for both me and my spouse) - will they accept and update the online tax transcripts (even these 8606 might be duplicate)

Assuming this is the first time, your basis goes on Form 8606 Lines 1,3, 14.

If you decide to file it, do not pay any $50. fee.

It is recommended to attach the Form 8606, only, to Form 1040-X.

Since no dollare amounts are changing on Form 1040-X leave lines 1-23 EMPTY.

In Part III explain why you are filing Form 8606.

If you filed a Joint return there is a taxpayer 8606 and a spouse 8606.

@panacea6565

You are doing all this just to be safe.

Any professional tax software is going to generate Form 8606 for a non-deductible contribution.

The person doing your taxes would then ask you if you filed any Form 8606 previously. I used HRBlock (though asking question on TT forum). The only problem is I lost my documents(I filed offline using HRB software, and not online) AND IRS transcript does not show form 8606.

But to be on safer side, I will file 1040-X with 8606 twice (one for me and one for my spouse). Hope after sending these docs, I will able to see 8606 also, on the IRS transcripts on my online account @ IRS

"In Part III explain why you are filing Form 8606."

does this content make sense?

"We are filing form 8606 for me(ABC) and my spouse(XYZ). Our contribution for traditional IRA are non-deductible for 2020 tax filing, and I am not sure if I filed these forms earlier with my tax return for 2020. When I checked the IRS transcripts on the IRS portal I did not find form 8606 there, so sending them here(attached). Hope I see these forms applied to my and spouse account in IRS online portal"

So I am planning to send one 1040-X and two 8606(one for me and another for my spouse).

And hope after this, I can convert the t-IRA to roth IRA (backdoor conversion to roth IRA)

The response from IRS will probably be something like:

"we received your forms and updated your records accordingly".

Due to issues in IRS, expect to get that nine to ten months after you send it.

@panacea6565

Each 8606 shows the name and SSN of the IRA owner.

That should go without saying ...

@panacea6565

there is no reason to wait.

A conversion today would not be reported until April. Or October if you request an extension of time to file.

Fingers crossed.

Now going to contribute to IRA for 2022, and then conversion to Roth IRA

Note: The only time(till date) I contributed to IRA is tax year 2020, and it was nondeductible contribution
