If you are using the TurboTax online editions, which your post shows you using the online Self-Employed Edition, there are no e-file fees for either a federal or state tax return. The TurboTax online account fees are for the use of the software to assist in completing a tax return. The State program fee when using the online Self-Employed edition is $49.

If using the TurboTax desktop editions installed on a personal computer there is an e-file fee of $25 for each state return e-filed (except for New York state which is free). Using the desktop editions there are 5 free federal tax return e-files included in the purchase price of the software.

Why was I charged a fee to e-file a Colorado state tax return? I thought I received 5 free

What software are you really using? You posted your question from online Self-Employed. If you are using online software you pay separate fees for the federal and state returns. If you are actually using one of the CD/download versions, then you do get five federal e-files and software for one specific state, but there is always---always---an extra fee to e-file the state return. If you want to prepare the state return and file it for free, then print, sign and mail the state if you used the CD/download.

E-filing fee in desktop software

Did you purchase desktop software with state software included? They sell Deluxe both with and without state software--so you have to be careful which one you choose. And even if it does have the state software download included, that is for preparing the state. There is an extra fee to e-file the state. You can avoid the state e-file fee if you print and mail the state instead of e-filing it.
