NJ nonresident return - supposed to tax income from all states?

I was a TX resident in 2025, and NJ resident in 2020, 2021, and 2024. My employer granted me stock options in 2020 that I exercised and sold in 2025. The spread of exercise_price-grant_price was treated as ordinary income, with federal and state taxes (for NJ, the tax was in proportion to how many days I was an NJ resident in the period from grant to exercise) deducted at time of exercise, with the (federal and state) (income and tax withheld) reported on my W2.

For my 2025 return I am filing Form NJ-1040NR since my W2 has the NJ tax. Looks like the NJ tax calculation as instructed by NJ-1040NR is basically (NJ tax on total income from all states)*(income from NJ sources i.e. reported on W2)/(total income from all states).

I don't get why it's taxed that way. My NJ tax is sourced from holding the options before 2025, I paid the tax in 2025 because I exercised, that makes sense. However say I also had $1 million in capital gains, in a separate unrelated stock sale, bought and sold in 2025. Under the NJ-1040NR, there would also be a proportion of NJ tax on that $1 million, since it's included in total income from all states. But that $1 million was completely earned in TX, why should any of that be taxed by NJ due to NJ income that happened before 2025?

No, you won't need to do that for part-year returns. In your case, you lived and worked in PA for part of the year, then moved and lived/worked in WI for the rest, so

PA will tax only the income you earned while you were a PA resident.

WI will tax only the income you earned while you were a WI resident.

There should be no need for the credit since the 2 income/tax streams do not overlap.

I also ran into this issue. I haven't seen a solution, but I believe I have figured it out. There is confusion over AZ Sched A lines 1,2,3 and lines 1A,2A,3A. The actual problem is with lines 1A,2A,3A which are on page 2 of AZ Schedule A in the section "Adjustment to State Income Taxes". The problem is if you claimed AZ tax credits (line 2A) greater than the state tax you owe (line 1A), line 3A would be negative. In this case TT enters zero for 3A, but apparently the state verification computes a negative number which does not match the zero on the return. So, technically the error message (re: the calculation) is correct but logically not. The state validation needs to check that if 2A is greater than 1A, a zero is a valid value for 3A. I believe TT Tax should also check what you entered for state tax credits, which ultimately goes to 2A, does not exceed 1A and at least give you a warning. The state also should adjust the form line 3A to say if negative, enter zero. I reduced my state tax credit to the amount I owed, (not the full credit which was more than I owed, and would not be applied anyway), so the calculation of 3A resulted in zero. Following this my return was accepted.

Re: Maryland Local Tax is very high in the return Turbotax generated = 68% of State Tax. How can ...

Here is a breakdown of why this is happening and how to verify if TurboTax is actually making an error.

In Maryland, the state tax and local tax are calculated using the same taxable income base, but with different rates.

State Rate: For most middle-income Marylanders, the state tax rate is approximately 4.75%.

Local Rate: Most counties (like Montgomery, Prince George’s, Baltimore City/County, etc.) charge 3.20%.

The Ratio: 3.20 divided by 4.75 = 67.3%

If you live in a high-tax county, your local tax will almost always sit right around 67% to 68% of your state tax. If your income is higher and you hit the 5% or 5.5% state brackets, that ratio might dip slightly, but for the vast majority of residents, your observation is mathematically consistent with Maryland’s tax structure.

If you still suspect an error (for example, if you moved or the county listed is wrong), check these three areas in TurboTax:

Check Your County Residency:

Go to the Personal Info section. Ensure you have selected the correct county of residence as of December 31. If TurboTax thinks you live in Baltimore City (3.20%) but you actually live in Worcester County (2.25%), the calculation will be wrong.

Verify Form 502, Line 28-31 for the local tax calculation.

Line 28: Maryland Taxable Net Income.

Line 31: Local Tax.

Divide Line 31 by Line 28. The result should match your county's 2025/2026 rate (e.g., 0.032 for 3.2%).

To print or view your forms, including all worksheets:

In desktop, switch to Forms Mode.

For online:

If you have a carryover solar credit, go through the Energy Credits interview. How do I enter Home Energy Tax Credits? You will find energy credits in the Your Home section in Deductions & Credits.

Re: I work in the city, but I don't live in the city.. somehow it has me living in the city, but ...

Follow these steps:

Federal

Go to My Info > Edit your name.

Check the section: "Tell us the state you lived in."

Look for a specific question below it: "Did you live in a Michigan city with a local income tax?"

Select No (or ensure you haven't selected Jackson there).

State

Open to the Michigan interview.

Proceed until you see a screen titled "Michigan City Tax Returns."

Click Start/Edit next to Jackson.

It will ask for your Residency Status. Select Non-Resident.

The Allocation Screen: It will then ask how much of your income was earned in Jackson. Since you work there, you'll likely report your full W-2 wages, but the software will now apply the lower 0.5% tax rate instead of the full resident rate.
