To file a 2024 return you will need to use the download version of TurboTax 2024. You cannot use the current year software to file a previous year return as the tax laws change from year to year.

You cannot change the tax year. The current online program is for 2025 only. Only a 2025 return can be prepared online and only a 2025 return can be e-filed.

Online preparation and e-filing for 2022, 2023, and 2024 is permanently closed.

Note: The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac. It cannot be used on a mobile device.

To file a return for a prior tax year

If you need to prepare a return for 2022, 2023, or 2024 you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign, and mail the return(s)

https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/

You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.

Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/state-taxes/contact-state-department-revenue/L9qVToi02_US_en_US?uid=m6e06um0

https://www.irs.gov/refunds

Refunds for tax years 2021 or earlier have been forfeited and will not be paid to you even if shown on the tax return form. But if you owe tax due, you will still have to pay, and you will be billed later for the interest and penalties owed. TurboTax will not calculate the penalties or interest. That will be done by the IRS/state after they receive your return with your payment of the tax due as shown on the tax form(s).

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

Re: HOW DO YOU ENTER THE IEDC VCI TAX CREDIT

Here are the steps to take to claim the Indiana Venture Capital Investment credit. This must be done using a TurboTax desktop version, not TurboTax Online.

Click Forms in the upper right corner.

If the Sch IN-OCC form is not shown in the list of forms in your return, then add it by clicking Open Form in the upper left corner and find Sch IN-OCC in the list under Indiana by clicking the +.

Once the Sch IN-OCC is open, scroll down to the VCI Credit Smart Worksheet to enter your information.

Enter the certification year, the total credit approved by IEDC on line F1, and any carryover credit from a prior year on line F6.

Those entries will take the credit to the appropriate tax forms automatically.

@lcleven01

Yes, if the income from the other state took you above the filing threshold, then you would need to file a NY IT-203. The NY Adjusted gross income Federal amount is the amount that is reported on your federal return. This is the amount that determines if you have to file a NY tax return. If that amount is above $3,100 then you will need to file the IT-203.

Form 140X is the Arizona Amended Tax Return. Is there an additional form included in your return, or is the form titled incorrectly in the forms list.

Re: WI state tax, property tax credit not applying

This is a result of a major 2025 Wisconsin tax law change that forces you to choose between two benefits.

Starting with the 2025 tax year, Wisconsin introduced a $24,000 retirement income subtraction for individuals aged 67 or older. However, there is a "catch" built into the legislation: If you claim the $24,000 retirement income subtraction (on Schedule SB), you can't claiming the School Property Tax Credit, the Married Couple Credit, and several other state credits.

TurboTax is programmed to perform a "Best Interest" calculation. For most taxpayers, subtracting $24,000 from their taxable income saves significantly more money than taking a $300 credit off their tax bill.

If you or your spouse are 67 or older, TurboTax likely applied the $24,000 subtraction automatically because it resulted in a lower total tax.

Here's how you can verify this is what happened:

Go to Forms Mode.

In the list of forms on the left, find Schedule SB.

Look at Line 16 (Retirement Income Subtraction).

If there is a number there (like $24,000 or $48,000), that is why your Property Tax Credit is missing.

Also, check your WI Form 1, Line 17. If your "Tax from tax table" is already $0 because of the retirement subtraction, the property tax credit (which is non-refundable) would have nothing to offset anyway.

This seems to be a bug in the TurboTax software: when I went through and took the business use of the home deduction for schedule C and the business portion of the property tax, and then went on to the state filing for New Jersey, TurboTax listed the entire property tax amount and if I'd hadn't caught it, I would have taken portion of that deduction twice. TurboTax really needs clear this up and fix this problem or many New Jersey business owners who use a portion of their home are going to take a double deduction without knowing it.

Do I need to file a NY state tax return as a non-resident of NY?

I did some work for a college located in New York state (not city) while taking courses there, and received a 1099-MISC. The amount was right below the 2025 standard deduction threshold of $3,100 for Single (and can be claimed as a dependent on another taxpayer's federal return). However, I do have income from a different state that took my total gross income above the threshold. I am an undergraduate student and not a resident of NY. Also, no taxes were withheld on the 1099-MISC.

My understanding is that I only need to file a New York State tax return if I have "New York source income". However, I am confused about how the threshold for filing is determined ($3,100 in my case). Is it based on my total gross income, or "New York source income"? What's the definition of "New York adjusted gross income Federal amount column (Form IT-203, line 31)"?

And here's the emails I got back. Just the lines in my Thunderbird email program, not the actual emails. So if you didn't get an Accepted or Rejected email for state then you didn't finish filing state.

Looks like you used the Desktop program? Sounds like you didn't finish filing the state return after paying for the state efile. You do get separate accepted emails, one for federal and one for State.

And you can check the efile status directly in the Desktop program. Go up to File at the very top bar. Then Electronic Filing, then Check Status.

And you can go to Forms mode and find the Filing instructions for federal and state. And if you save the pdf it will have filing instructions page and my Calif return has an E-file return authorization page. There may be other ways to check too.

TurboTax receives no information about refunds. Contact your state agency if you don’t get a letter explaining the adjustment in a few weeks.
