Yes, the 1099-S box 2 is used for inputting the 1099-S. You want the IRS computer to match those numbers.

In the "Cost" or "Basis" box, enter the sum of your Buying Cost + Improvements.

Use the "I had selling expenses" or "Other details" section to enter your commissions and 2025 closing costs.

The program will do the math.

Re: Arizona Return Rejected

I also ran into this issue. I haven't seen a solution, but I believe I have figured it out. There is confusion over AZ Sched A lines 1,2,3 and lines 1A,2A,3A. The actual problem is with lines 1A,2A,3A which are on page 2 of AZ Schedule A in the section "Adjustment to State Income Taxes". The problem is if you claimed AZ tax credits (line 2A) greater than the state tax you owe (line 1A), line 3A would be negative. In this case TT enters zero for 3A, but apparently the state verification computes a negative number which does not match the zero on the return. So, technically the error message (re: the calculation) is correct but logically not. The state validation needs to check that if 2A is greater than 1A, a zero is a valid value for 3A. I believe TT Tax should also check what you entered for state tax credits, which ultimately goes to 2A, does not exceed 1A and at least give you a warning. The state also should adjust the form line 3A to say if negative, enter zero. I reduced my state tax credit to the amount I owed, (not the full credit which was more than I owed, and would not be applied anyway), so the calculation of 3A resulted in zero. Following this my return was accepted.

Re: Maryland Local Tax is very high in the return Turbotax generated = 68% of State Tax. How can ...

Here is a breakdown of why this is happening and how to verify if TurboTax is actually making an error.

In Maryland, the state tax and local tax are calculated using the same taxable income base, but with different rates.

State Rate: For most middle-income Marylanders, the state tax rate is approximately 4.75%.

Local Rate: Most counties (like Montgomery, Prince George’s, Baltimore City/County, etc.) charge 3.20%.

The Ratio: 3.20 divided by 4.75 = 67.3%

If you live in a high-tax county, your local tax will almost always sit right around 67% to 68% of your state tax. If your income is higher and you hit the 5% or 5.5% state brackets, that ratio might dip slightly, but for the vast majority of residents, your observation is mathematically consistent with Maryland’s tax structure.

If you still suspect an error (for example, if you moved or the county listed is wrong), check these three areas in TurboTax:

Check Your County Residency:

Go to the Personal Info section. Ensure you have selected the correct county of residence as of December 31. If TurboTax thinks you live in Baltimore City (3.20%) but you actually live in Worcester County (2.25%), the calculation will be wrong.

Verify Form 502, Line 28-31 for the local tax calculation.

Line 28: Maryland Taxable Net Income.

Line 31: Local Tax.

Divide Line 31 by Line 28. The result should match your county's 2025/2026 rate (e.g., 0.032 for 3.2%).

To print or view your forms, including all worksheets:

In desktop, switch to Forms Mode.

For online:

On the left side, select Tax Tools

Select Print center

Select Print, save or preview this year's return

If you have not paid, select pay now

Follow these steps:

Federal

Go to My Info > Edit your name.

Check the section: "Tell us the state you lived in."

Look for a specific question below it: "Did you live in a Michigan city with a local income tax?"

Select No (or ensure you haven't selected Jackson there).

State

Open to the Michigan interview.

Proceed until you see a screen titled "Michigan City Tax Returns."

Click Start/Edit next to Jackson.

It will ask for your Residency Status. Select Non-Resident.

The Allocation Screen: It will then ask how much of your income was earned in Jackson. Since you work there, you'll likely report your full W-2 wages, but the software will now apply the lower 0.5% tax rate instead of the full resident rate.

You are thinking tax liability which is not the same as income. Let me explain:

For example:

NY tax on your total federal income is $8,000

But only 10% of your income was earned in NY

NY tax liability will be 10% of $8,000 or $800.

Let me get you to preview your return and check.

If you are using the online version:

go to Tax Tools,

then select Tools,

select View Tax Summary,

on the left side, select Preview My 1040.

In the desktop program, switch to forms mode.

Follow these steps:

Switch to Forms mode.

Look on the left side for the forms in your return.

Look for the red exclamation mark

Select that form

Look for the pink box

You can scroll on that form and delete an entry or the whole form.

Re: Non qualified deferred compensation plan

Wages can't equal zero. Check this:

W2

Box 11: Is it definitely filled in? This is the "key" that tells NY this isn't "normal" work salary.

Box 16: Check Form IT-203, Line 1: If this is zero, but Line 16 is also effectively zero, NY thinks you’ve made an entry error on your W-2.

In the New York State portion of the program:

Look for a screen titled "Identify the source of your New York wages" or "W-2 Wage Allocation."

You will likely see the NQDC W-2 listed.

Instead of leaving it at $0, look for the option to allocate by percentage or manually allocate.

The Trick: NY State e-file servers often reject a "0" on the state wage line if the W-2 shows NY. To satisfy the error, some users find they must ensure the "Federal" amount and "New York" amount are reconciled in the Wage Allocation section. If the income was 100% earned/received while a non-resident, it should be allocated to your "Other State" or "Non-NY" column.

If the above fails, go back to your w2 and enter $1 in NY income box 16.

You only need it in community property states filing MFS where you lived together at some time during the year. You may not have been required to file it. If you do, search for 8958 with the magnifying glass and select the jump to link.

Non qualified deferred compensation plan

I m retired, part-time NY state resident with a non-qualified deferred compensation plan from my original employer. The proceeds are reported on a W2 in box 1 and box 11. On my NY State return, it looks like Turbo tax is correctly reporting this income on form IT-203 form, line 16 (line 1 is zero) but everytime I try to electronically file my NY state return, it gets rejected by NY state because "NYS Wages should not be equal to zero when W2 shows NY wages." Fed return was electronically filed with no issues. Does anyone know how to fix this problem? Did I miss a box to check somewhere?
