Bug Report for 2025 TurboTax Premier Desktop version 2025.27.47.48

I just completed my 2025 taxes, for the 32nd year in a row using TurboTax Desktop (I've used it since 1994, when it ran on MS-DOS!), and I want to report a few bugs.

#1: Most important first: I was entering text into the Feedback form at the very end of the program, after submitting my Federal & State returns online. I exceeded the 2,000-character limit on the text box (this limit should be shown on the screen somewhere, preferably with a real-time character count). When I clicked Submit, I received a debug-style error message (very technical & very unfriendly) saying that I had exceeded the character limit. When I clicked in the text box to try to delete some of my text, there was no response. When I clicked the close button on the text box, TURBOTAX CRASHED. When I restarted the program, I was no longer offered the option to submit Feedback. I can count on two hands the number of actual crashes that I've experienced in 32 years of usage, so this is a SERIOUS issue -- even though it has no effect on tax data!

#2: My itemized deductions were more than four times my taxable income. The program chose "Standard Deduction" for a reason that it didn't properly explain (since the Refund was zero in both cases). I changed the selection to "Itemized Deductions". After changing it, the program STILL displayed "Standard Deduction" on the selection screen and in subsequent screens (that's the bug). Later in the interview, it DID say that I was using Itemized Deductions. This is an "incorrect information shown to the user" issue, rather than an "incorrect program-data" issue.

#3: I have a standard mortgage and a HELOC. I answered the question about how I was using the HELOC funds by saying NO, I did not use ANY of the funds to improve the mortgaged house. Even with that answer, the program added my HELOC interest to my standard mortgage interest as a deduction (that's the bug). The program was VERY clear in saying that HELOC interest was NOT deductible unless the HELOC funds were used to improve the mortgaged house (i.e., unless I answered YES). This is one of the few "incorrect program data" issues that I've ever seen in 32 years of using TurboTax. Maybe I've been lucky.

#4: Entering the information for the 1099-LTC form was not as smooth and easy as all other forms. For example, the program asked me to enter the amount in Box 1 but ONLY if "Reimbursed amount" was checked in Box 3. This is NOT typical of the way other 1099 form information is entered. Usually, TurboTax asks the user to enter ALL the information on the form and then the program draws conclusions from it and asks additional questions, rather than asking the user to enter information conditionally, based on the content of the form. The latter is a recipe for data-entry errors! This may be a subtle point, but the difference is obvious to an experienced user-interface design person. This form's dialog was written by someone who isn't following the same conventions as other forms. Also, the Help information on the "Number of days" field in the 1099-LTC form entry is difficult to understand, especially since the "Number of days" is NOT a field on the actual form. This field does NOT seem to affect the calculation in any obvious way, which makes it even more difficult to understand. That portion of Help needs to be re-written from more of a user perspective rather than a tax-law perspective.

#5: The $12,000 (2 x $6,000) Additional Senior Deduction from Schedule 1A isn't consistently reported in the various summary Tools and in the text shown to the user. Sometimes the $12,000 is added to the sum of all the itemized deductions, and sometimes it isn't. In the tax form itself, the $12,000 data is of course correctly handled. I'm talking just about the "information numbers" that are shown to the user in various progress dialogs and reports. Also, the first time that number is shown to the user on a summary screen, it is simply called "Additional Deductions" without any explanation of what it is and where it's coming from. It should be identified as "Additional Deductions from Schedule 1A". That number is calculated by the program and is not the result of any user-dialog, so it's confusing to present it to the user for the first time without any explanation. Since this is the first year that particular deduction has been available, you might say that the presentation will be improved in subsequent years -- but that's not acceptable. It should be thoroughly tested in the first release! A UI specialist should track the display of the number through the app, irrespective of how the actual tax data is handled.

because I am non-resident of the state, I shouldn't have to pay taxes on the contracts and straddles income, but I am not able to select the income as "non resident income" in the capital gains and losses summary page. Has anyone found a workaround for this? it seems like a glitch in the software.

Wages page for Detroit is not showing up. I was a part time resident last year. I went through all questions several times, but my W2 income still is not showing up on my return (I did not submit it yet). I selected that I need a Detroit return and noted i was a part time resident. There isn't a wages page where I can enter information manually. W2 income is showing on Michigan return but not Detroit. It just says I'm owed a refund, which I know is incorrect because it's the same amount that I submitted as an estimated tax payment last year.

My line 29 of schedule C is a negative number. Line 30 is showing up blank since I don't have a home office to deduct. However line 31 is showing up as 0. Also possibly related is my taxable income under this business is showing up as 0. For the at-risk I have "all of my investment in this activity is at risk".

What is causing this error, and how do I fix it

You are right: this is a totally brain dead feature of TurboTax. It pretty much ruins the entire TurboTax experience, which is otherwise great, for no reason. It's inexplicable why we must be tortured by this obvious deficiency. They let you file an extension electronically for free, but it's ridiculously cumbersome and redundant and risky regarding spreading social security numbers around. Why is being able to print an extension not a seamless part of the program along with everything else? And why is it so difficult to even find out how to file even an electronic extension? I wish they would correct this glaring problem, which would be very easy for them to do.

Yes, both of you will have to enter Form 1095-A on your tax returns. TurboTax will ask you questions about if the policy was shared with someone and how to allocate the costs and credit.

The percentages that you should enter for your premium, your SLCSP, and your advance payment should be an amount that you and your family member agree on. It could be 50/50/50 for your premium/ your SLCSP/your advance or another amount. Make sure you are in agreement and that the percentages on all tax returns add up to 100% together.

TurboTax will calculate the information that should be on your return based on your answers.

Refer to the TurboTax article Where do I enter my 1095-A? for navigation instructions.

TurboTax Deluxe (Windows 11 Pro) displayed the following text:

We need a it more info to see if you qualify

Checking for

Medical Expenses Deduction

with a Skip for now button and an Enter info button.

This makes no sense because I entered all into that TurboTax asked for during the Step-by-Step process to enter my medical expenses.

I pressed the Skip for now button and went through a few other pages. It eventually showed the "Your 2025 Deductions & Credits" page. It shows "Medical Expenses $0" when it should have had a dollar figure greater than $0.

I then went to Forms: Medical Expenses Worksheet. The worksheet has the correct dollar figure in Line 3 and the correct Medical Miles driven in line 9.a. Line 12 shows blank instead of my actual Total of medical and dental expenses (add lines 1 through 11j). Line 14 shows 0 instead of my actual Total deductible medical and dental expenses.

I deleted the Forms: Medical Expenses Worksheet and answered the questions as I did before. That did not fix the aforementioned problem.

I then pressed on Online menu's -> "Send Tax File to Agent" menu-item. It sent my tax file to an agent and displayed a Token number, which I recorded.

TurboTax Deluxe 2025:

WinPerRelease Version: [phone number removed]

TurboTax.exe Version: 2025.47.27.48

Windows 11 Pro

=

Thank you for this. Follow up question- since I already filed and it states that I owe do I hold off setting up a payment plan with the IRS? Or do I set it up and then wait for them to make adjustments based on my corrected return?

TurboTax automatically calculates the additional senior deduction based on your date of birth and your income. You will see it on Schedule 1a, line 13b of your 1040 form. There is nothing extra that you need to do.

Taxpayers who are 65 and older may qualify for the additional deduction of $6,000 ($12,000 for MFJ). To be eligible for the additional deduction, you must meet the eligibility criteria below:

Be 65 or older by December 31, 2025

File Married filing Jointly if married

Modified adjusted gross income under $75,000 ($150,000 for MFJ). The deduction phases out for taxpayers above this income.

Review the TurboTax articles Tax Counseling for Seniors and the IRS Fact Sheet Deductions for Seniors for more information.
