I have a business recapture that I am trying to figure out.

I took the special depreciation in October 2023 and decided that starting 2025, I will no longer use my vehicle for business purposes and just recapture the depreciation.

TurboTax walks me through the questions and then says I need to do the recapture. So, I fill in the amounts and then in the review it tells me the numbers are too small. It says to recapture at Straight line depreciation.

Can someone help do the math for me? Or where am I going wrong? Let me know what info you need and I'll be happy to tell you.

Re: Updating only State return for Dividends on US Govt Treasuries leads to Federal tax payable

I checked Schedule B and it has the original numbers only. I went ahead and removed the number I entered for the amount related to US Govt Interest and my NC state tax number came back to zero but the Federal remained as is. This is strange. I am thinking if I can delete the Turbo tax document that it creates in the Turbo Tax folder on my Desktop and replace it with the version I saved when i filed the tax. Would that be ok? I am hoping that it would show me what i was seeing when i filed.

Thanks again

If you have a loss reported on the K-1 schedule, you need to indicate that you materially participated in the venture for the loss to be deductible. Also, you need to make sure you don't have money that is not "at risk" in the venture.

You see the material participation question on the screen that says Did you Participate? early in the Schedule K-1 entry process. You see the at risk question on the screen that says Describe the Partnership. One of the options is All of my investment in this activity is at risk. Your investment must be at risk to be able to deduct a business loss. You see the at risk question after you enter all the numbers in boxes on your K-1 schedule.

You elect to treat your spouse as a resident for your federal return (to get the higher standard deduction and better tax brackets). Residency for state tax purposes is usually based on physical presence and domicile (where you intend to make your permanent home).

CA:

community property state- requires income splitting

requires same status as federal

nonresident spouse means filing CA Form 540NR

AZ:

community property state - each report half of the other's income

can file MFJ or MFS

AZ resident

Re: Inherited 1099-B

Follow the instructions below (and above) to reach the location to change your inherited or gifted investment sales.

Sign into your TurboTax account, then follow the steps below.

Select Wages & Income > Scroll to Stocks, Mutual Funds, Bonds, Other > Review

Select Edit beside the inherited stock or the gifted investment

Continue to Review your (description of inherited stock) sales > Edit

This should take you to the investments you need to change and allow you to make the necessary changes.

Below is additional information for inherited investments. Gifts cost basis is the same as the giver plus any gift tax paid if applicable, but see some additional information about gift basis.

Gain Basis: If you sell the gift for a gain, your basis is the same as the donor's adjusted basis just before the gift.

Loss Basis: If the FMV at the time of the gift is less than the donor's basis, your basis for calculating a loss is the FMV. If you sell for a price between the FMV and the donor’s basis, you recognize neither gain nor loss.

Your cost basis is the fair market value on the date of death of the decedent, plus the capital improvements (not repairs but improvements that are capital in nature). The expenses of sale will reduce any gain or increase any loss as well. This is entered as the sale of investment property and can be entered as follows.

Enter the inherited property sale in TurboTax using the steps provided.

Open or continue your return: Choose the Search box and type 'sale of second home' then use the Jump to link to enter your inherited sale) or follow the menu. In TurboTax Online select 'See more' in the FAQ then click 'sold second home'.

Under Wages & Income scroll to Stocks, Cryptocurrency, Mutual Funds, Bonds, Other (1099-B)

Answer Yes on the Did you sell any stocks, mutual funds, bonds, or other investments in 2025? screen

If you land on the Your investment sales summary screen, select Add More Sales

On the OK, let's start with one investment type screen, select Other, then Continue

On the Tell us more about this sale screen, enter the name of the person or institution that brokered the sale

On the next screen, select Other (choose this also for inherited homes) then select I inherited it under How did you receive this investment? (For TurboTax Desktop you can enter a description of 'Inherited Home' and long term holding period).

Re: Turbo Tax for 2 years in a row has miscalcuated my Ohio underpayment penalty

TurboTax calculates an estimated penalty based on various factors, including your tax from the previous year and your tax withheld and estimated taxes paid in for the current tax year. That estimate can vary from what the state calculates.

Assuming your penalty for late payment of tax assessed by the state is accurate, the amount of tax and penalty you owe would be the same even if TurboTax had calculated the correct amount when you filed your tax return. So, I don't believe the TurboTax 100% guaranteed would apply, as you won't pay more tax overall as a result of the estimated tax shortfall.
