You probably have Line 32b marked instead on 32a marked on Schedule C. Check that line and edit it if necessary. Is my business investment at risk? If 32b is marked, you can't claim a loss. Your investment has to be marked ''at risk'' - - It is extremely rare for your business to be not at risk. 32a is the normal box to be marked there.

Filing as Resident with 1042S and claiming tax treaty US-Italy.

Hi Everyone,

TLDR: How does a resident alien report a 1042S (income code 16, Box-3a: 00, Box-4a: 16) in addition to a W2 on TurboTax Desktop and also claim tax treaty benefits?

My current situation is the following:

I began my appointment at University X in MA on J1 Research Scholar status. My appointment ran from January 2024 to October 2025. I was invited and paid through my professor’s grant. In November 2025, I moved to University Y in CA, still under J1 Research Scholar status and still paid through my new professor’s grant also for the research I am doing.

For tax year 2025 I received a 1042S from University X and a W2 from University Y.

I have added my W2 income on TurboTax desktop, but I cannot understand how to correctly report the 1042S: whether as a Wages & Income>Less Common Income>Miscellaneous Income>Other reportable income or as Deductions & Credits>Education>Expenses and Scholarships. My second question is: how to claim tax treaty benefits between US and Italy for both the income from the W2 and the 1042S?

Two additional details that might be important:

- I entered the US at the end of December, 2023 under my visa, and that is why I am considered a resident alien for 2025 under the Substantial Presence Test.

- I believe that, based on my situation, I may be eligible to claim the benefits of the US–Italy tax treaty under Article 20 for tax year 2025, because my initial visit was expected not to exceed two years for the purpose of conducting research at a recognized educational institution, and because I was a resident of Italy immediately before coming to the US. Therefore, my first tax year was 2024 and my second is 2025.

Thank you for any help,

The computer I'm on now is a Windows 11 MSI laptop that I bought 2 years ago.

I created a blank file with nothing in it and it opened fine, so that's ONE time opened successfully. That mean there's absolutely been some bug with the software for years. This has driven me crazy because in prior years, this issue happened the due date when I needed to make a quick fix (so I couldn't use the PDF) before I tried printing. That was before I knew I could import from PDF so I had to rush to redo everything...

I might need to test every single one of my types of incomes and deductions saved as its own file to find out what the issue is. I'll report back when I figure it out.

There are very few forum threads about file corruption of the *.tax2025 data file with every file save. You didn't say if you are using a Windows 11 PC or a Mac (Sonoma 14 or higher.) I'm suspicious it may be a Mac, however. If so, have all the computers over the 5 years been Mac?

If you are using a Mac, is your data file unknowingly being encrypted in the keychain? TurboTax will sometimes say a file is "corrupted" if it's password-protected/encrypted.

I have been using TurboTax for 30 years now and I have never encountered this issue of file corruption. The only root cause I can think of is an issue in your storage (encrypted filesystem?) or RAM. How old is your computer? Which OS does it run?

I would absolutely love to fix this issue. Last year I had to fix it the day that taxes were due before the post office closed... Seriously, are there any suggestions? I'm a programmer, so I'm pretty tech-savvy. The only thing that's been in common with this and my prior computer is that they had SSD's.

You can always file for an extension (form 4868) which gets you another 6 months. I do this every year because some K-1s do not appear until September. You still have to pay what you think you owe by 4/15. If you do owe, then using EFTPS (maybe some other IRS online payment system will work as well) mark your payment as 2025 Extension and you don't have to file the trivial form. If you don't owe, you write 0 on the form. You can do the same for your state. This might give TT enough time get their act together. I did the worksheet delete method and it worked ok.

I have used TurboTax for years. Every single year, every single time I save my progress on TurboTax, it is corrupted. This has happened on MULTIPLE different computers. I have literally never successfully opened a file that TurboTax has created. It is really maddening. The only way I can possibly read a TurboTax file is when it's been saved to PDF which is absolutely insane.

Today, I finished filling out all my tax information for 2025 in TurboTax. The program prompted me to update TurboTax and I just followed its instructions... Once again, the file it saved minutes before opened as corrupted (including the filename that starts with a tilde). What is wrong with this software? How come this issue hasn't been fixed for 5+ years running?

The error message says: Hmm, looks like we hit a slight snag in this section. Let's get you back to your taxes. Make sure your Internet is connected, and then select Try again or check back in a few minutes. It's been over an hour and I already tried all of the above recommendations.

I'm a basic employee and my taxes are relatively simple. My wife has had her own business for several years (no employees, she was a subcontractor). In 2024, she became a fulltime employee for one of the businesses she subcontracted for (she was the only employee and ran the administration) while continuing her subcontracting with other companies. In 2025, she purchased that business. All of this time, we have been able to use TurboTax Home & Business. This year, we purchased Home & Business, but was finding nowhere to enter the Form 8594 that we were given for purchasing that business. I called TurboTax Support and they told me that I needed to use TurboTax Business. I purchased and downloaded TurboTax Business, only to immediately hit a brick wall due to my wife's business being a Sole Proprietor LLC. Which type of TurboTax am I supposed to use? I also want to get live tax expert advice in the package.

I just had to confirm who I am via video, social, license, and Bill. AND I had to confirm/allow the IRS to have access to my social, address, phone number, email.. Basically all my identifying information. Just uncomfortable with this...

IF they didn't already know this info... I'm not super keen to just offer it up... Ya know.

Anyone know why this is important/REQUIRED for them?
