However, I'm considering signing up to drive for a food delivery service to help supplement my income. (This is the option that works best with my current schedule, as I would be able to work this driver job in between my current job).

I'm having a little trouble understanding how I would handle my taxes if I decide to do this. I understand that the food delivery job is an "independent contractor" type of job, and that I will only receive a 1099 tax form if I earn more than $600 in the calendar year. Where my confusion comes in is with the "quarterly taxes" process. As I understand it, paying quarterly taxes is an important part of working an independent contractor job because it allows the government to be sure they can collect the correct amount of income tax for the year (rather than the contractor owing a large amount at the end of the year).

Does the fact that I have a W2 job as well change whether or not I need to pay quarterly taxes?

Do I need to even worry about quarterly taxes until I've met the $600 threshold?

How and where do I submit quarterly tax payments?

How do I know when these payments need to be submitted?

How can I tell or calculate how much I am supposed to be submitting each quarter?

If I am paying quarterly taxes properly, am I likely to owe money at the end of the year still?

I've tried looking at guides online and it feels like the information gets very complicated very fast. It's pretty frustrating because I'm trying to supplement my income, but the information available really makes it seem like I would end up owing several hundred dollars at the end of the tax year. That seems to negate the purpose of picking up another job to supplement my income. I understand every tax situation is different too, but I'm looking for advice to help navigate this odd situation.
Thu, 30 Sep 2021 20:52:54 GMT https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/file-with-turbotax/discussion/quarterly-taxes-for-1099-while-working-w2-job/01/2358116#M6047 cahil938 2021-09-30T20:52:54Z My boyfriend and father of child pays taxes in Europe https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/file-with-turbotax/discussion/my-boyfriend-and-father-of-child-pays-taxes-in-europe/01/2358115#M6046
Hello,

My boyfriend leaves in the US and works for an European Government here and does not pay taxes in the US.
Why do we owe more taxes?

In October 2019 I started a new job and used the new W2 format for the first time. My husband and I file jointly and 2019 taxes went fine. However for 2020 we ended up owing several thousand dollars. We did not have a significant bump up in salaries that year (overall just several thousand dollars between the both of us) and had no other significant changes to report. My husband has been at the same job for several years and never submitted a new W2 when they were introduced. Could this be the reason we ended up owing so much?

Recently, I ran our current numbers through the IRS calculator and it looks like we may end up owing a bunch again this year. Is there something that we are missing as to why the right amount of taxes are not being taken out? Is there something to the new W2 format that causes this? Never had this problem ever before. Thank you in advance for any help!

IRS 310 tax ref

I am amending my 2020 taxes because my parents decided not to claim me on their taxes. One of the questions Turbo Tax asked if I received the 1200 or 600 stimulus check, which I did not but on reviewing my bank account I noticed 0n 3/23/2020 a deposit for 577.00 with a code of IRS 310 Tax relief. I had applied for New York State unemployment and I thought it was from the state. When I researched the code I was coming up with a refund for unemployment taxes. I did receive unemployment in 2019. This was a month earlier then any stimulus check were distributed. My question what is this and do I some where list this as a stimulus check on my amended taxes? There is no amount for 577. only 1200 or 600. I also did not receive any thing in the mail explaining what it was for. It is ok to amend my 2020 taxes correct?

Hello I just started doordash and I have this app that tracks my expenses and mileage. I need help with what else do I need to be keeping track of. My husband scared that they're going to take my whole refund, I have one child. I have a full-time job and I do doordash on the side and I only want to make about $300 a week which last week I made $400 this week I'm only making $200. So I just need to know what I need to do before the end of the year and I have to pay out a lot of money. I am putting back 10 to 20% out of my door dashing money to help with taxes is that good enough? How do I configure Medicare and local taxes? Do I put in Lorain City taxes? I know you'll say yes to this answer but should I hire a tax professional when I do my taxes?

Quarterly taxes for 1099 while working W2 job

I live in Colorado and I've been working at a part-time traditional W2 job for the past couple years, and have not ever ended up owing money for taxes at the end of the year.

Should we have paid taxes on that income for 2020 anyway, do we need to file an amended tax return? Also, since he is part of a partnership entity in NY state, is this considered a pass-through entity and are we able to claim the federal tax on his income as a deduction to our NY state taxes due to the SALT deduction workaround recently approved by NY state? If so, how do we do that, what does that look like?

Thank you

Hi there! I am an employee at a boutique consulting firm based in the Bay Area. I just moved to Hawaii for 6 months. I was not planning on changing my address officially b/c I don't want to worry about tax issues, and neither does my employer since it's temporary! Is this technically legal if the move is temporary? Would there be a benefit tax-wise for myself and/or my employer for recognizing me as a Hawaii resident instead of a California resident?

Thanks in advance!

Hello! This past year i have been receiving freelance payments weekly which will result in a final 1099 at end of year. Since no tax is being taken out, are there other precautions and/or tax benefits for self-employed freelancers I should consider when filing? I am very concerned I will get hit by a large amount I owe. I save all my business receipts and plan on purchasing a new computer by year-end to use as a business expense, as well as it being a long overdue, much needed purchase. Thank you!

Hello! I recently found two jobs in the hospitality business. One of them hired me with the standard W-2 form while the second job (which isn't on a steady schedule and is more of an "on-call when-needed" situation) utilized the W-9. My question is: am I able to write off expenses for that second job now that I have a W-9, eg. gas, job-related clothing? Also, would I be able to write off health insurance (currently uninsured) as well, or is there a minimum of hours needed to work at that second job at play here? Thank you!

If that is true, then all our Premiums we have been paying this year thru market palce should be returned back when we eventually file the 8962 form next year, Correct ?

unemployment/disability/new job

In 2021 I was on UI, then Disability, then back to UI. This created a lot of red flags, but I think it got straightened out. I have not worked since Jan 15, 2021. I have been offered a full-time position today. I should start onboarding this week. My 2020 taxes were messed up because of some 1099, and I ended up owing quite a bit of money. I want to make sure things go smoothly this year. What do I need to know about taking this new job, and how are the UI/Disability payments going to affect my taxes?

Hello,

My wife and I file jointly and she became an independent contractor as a home health therapist in July. She is not a business but sole-proprietor.

I signed her up using QB to manage her expenses and log income. I ran her estimated taxes on September 15th and paid the tax owed from the IRS.gov site. I was unable to file the Schedule C because the 2021 form is not published yet.

I was also not able to upload the QB quarterly filing to TurboTax as I did not find a link/upload button to do so and figured it was because we are in the 3rd Quarter. Not sure.

1. I assume by Jan 15th 2022 when I file the 4th quarter taxes that everything may fall in to place?

2. Also; since she is sole-prop can't we just file annually?

Moving Out of the Country

I did not realize that the event was here and I posted this elsewhere -_- This is where I meant to post it. The instructions for this event were not very clear...Someone else already helped me with some of these questions, which I have thusly deleted. I need help with the remaining, still, please!

So, I am planning on moving to Scotland either later this year or very early next year. I have many questions, as I know I will still be taxed as an American but I also know there are tax treatise between the US and the UK.

1) What exactly is still taxed in the US (as I will NOT be working in the US at all, indefinitely) but I DO have a bank account I plan on keeping (for the purposes of paying my taxes, in all honesty, but it will have minimal money in it) and I DO have one MyFRS account (it only has like $4,000 in it and it's not currently being paid into so I'm not even sure if it's worth having). Will I be double-taxed just on my income or on other things?

2) Will I be taxed under the state of Florida as that is where I've lived all my life when I file my taxes? Please keep in mind that I am single, have no dependents, and own no property in Florida.

3) What receipts do I need to keep in the move and for perpetuity when I'm over there so I can continue to file my US taxes?

4) I am going to be working as an RN over there. Does this effect my taxes? As RN's make substantially more money over here than they do over there and I'm not sure if there are any tax breaks for healthcare workers working abroad.

5) I will be gifting my car to friends of mine who desperately need a car. Do I need to do something special on my taxes for this?

6) Will I still be able to use TurboTax or will I have to go to a special tax filer with my mounds of receipts? I've used TurboTax since I started doing taxes and I don't really know another way.

7) If, for whatever reason, the IRS audits me how would that...work? Would I just show them my receipts over a webcam, like...would they send a representative over to mine in Scotland?

😎 If I give to charity can that be taken off my US taxes as well as my UK taxes, or is that only counted once?

9) If I keep my nursing license in FL and continue to keep it updated so I'm able to work in FL, the money I paid on my CEU's in order to keep it active would still be tax-deductible, correct? Even though I am not working in FL? That is true for my renewal fees for my nursing license, as well?

Any other help would be graciously accepted!

"What if" scenarios and year round access to Turbo Tax with projections

Will Turbo Tax ever produce a version [on-line, preferably] that allows us to maintain our tax information for the current tax year, during the current tax year, so that we can estimate the tax implication for the following April. [For example, I would love to be able to input all my tax information early on in the calendar year (starting in Jan 2021 for my taxes due, April 2022), so that I can determine if stock sales, or independent work, are going to push my over the income thresholds of things like Roth IRA eligibility, or push me into a higher tax bracket, etc.] I realize that limits and laws may change before taxes are finally due, however, I think we can all agree that 90% of the code doesn't change drastically from year to year. And TT would simply put in a disclaimer that this is "just an estimate, based upon blah blah blah". I would also like to be able to save different scenarios of my taxes to show, "what if" I, sell this stock, take a withdrawal from a 401k, buy a new capital expenditure for my business, etc. And, it would be extremely helpful if TT woud show the difference, side by side of 2 or more files, like they do when they compare "last year's" vs. "this year's" and actually show the gain or loss.

Thanks

Estimated Taxes

Hi,

I started my own business in June after being a W2 worker my whole adult life. I read about estimated tax payments but had heard from a friend that they just pay all of their tax at the end of the year. Perhaps they are an independent contractor and I'm self-employed and therefore they are taxed differently? My issue is that I'm now learning about penalties for not paying your estimated tax quarterly. Can I avoid these penalties or is it too late? I also wanted to purchase the self-employed tax product now and get ahead of my tax payments, does Turbotax help facilitate estimated tax payments?

Capital Gain on selling house

My Father-In-Law passed away in 2015. My husband rented the house from 2017-2020, and sold it last month. To be able to figure the capital gain he will be taxed on, I understand he needs to get a valuation of the house when his father passed away. Where would he get that from? Would an appraiser be able to do that, or a realtor? Not sure where to go to have an official valuation. He thought about the property tax assessments, but that seems quite a bit lower than the actual value of the house. Any help?

I am starting a new job at substantially higher salary and also sold some stocks this year. Is there a way I can send in advance payment to cover taxes so I don’t get hit at filing time?

Are federal taxes supposed to be deducted from my money market savings in the state of Tennessee? If not, who shall I contact if they are to stop the taxing, or should I report this on my taxes?
