2019. 2017 & 2018 must be paper filings, but it appears I can use TTax for 2019 & file electronically. I happen to still have 2017 TurboTax - loaded it up and still able to access the Return filed for 2017.

I was hoping a few of you may have gone through this process.

So my question (actually 2) is the format for the 2017 Amended Return by paper. The ONLY thing that needs to be changed is to adjust the basis for several of my stock transactions - to use the Stepped-up Basis for the stock sale due to the death of my spouse in 2017 (missed that option in 2017).

1) Since I need to file a paper copy for the Amended Return - do need to print and resend the entire Return, or do I just send the 1040X page along with the revised Form 8949 pages (since that is the only thing being changed).

2) Several of the stock sales were reported under Short Term sales - whereas due to the death of my spouse, as I read the rules, it appears that in addition to using a stepped-up basis, all sales are now to be reported as LT Capital Gains. This is going to be a mess because someone, maybe TurboTax, split a lot of my sales in half - filing half of the sales as a ST Gain and the other half as a LT Gain using the date of the death of my spouse as the Acquired Date. The bottom line being, the reporting of the stock sales is ALL SCREWED UP (yes, I should have caught that in 2017, but trusted my Brokerages and TurboTax too much when I filed my 2017 Return to go through every stock transaction individually).

Anyway, should I try to correct each individual entry filed in 2017 (new adjusted basis) and move ST Gains entry to LT entries) - or should I just delete the ST Gain entries and replace them (the ST and LT split entries) with the correct LT entries - and should I even report them as an adjustment since most don't line up at all with the original tax filing. YES, it is a big mess.

ron in shawnee
Sun, 13 Sep 2020 20:01:19 GMT https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/after-you-file/discussion/amended-return-format-what-should-be-sent/01/1719809#M442684 roninks 2020-09-13T20:01:19Z 2018 tax refund https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/after-you-file/discussion/2018-tax-refund/01/1719808#M442683
I’ve never received my taxe return from 2018
Sun, 13 Sep 2020 20:00:16 GMT https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/after-you-file/discussion/2018-tax-refund/01/1719808#M442683 Edrevels95 2020-09-13T20:00:16Z How can I confirm my 2019 taxes have been filed https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/after-you-file/discussion/how-can-i-confirm-my-2019-taxes-have-been-filed/01/1719805#M442681 Sun, 13 Sep 2020 19:50:58 GMT https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/after-you-file/discussion/how-can-i-confirm-my-2019-taxes-have-been-filed/01/1719805#M442681 mrchardson209 2020-09-13T19:50:58Z Business 2019 Turbotax duplicating employee benefit program deduction on line 7 and line 18 https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/tax-credits-deductions/discussion/business-2019-turbotax-duplicating-employee-benefit-program-deduction-on-line-7-and-line-18/01/1719801#M163259
Hello,

Turbotax Business 2019 is duplicating my employee benefit program deduction. Logged out, cleaned all history files, and logged in again, but it keeps doing the same thing. I then selected "file by mail". Same loop started again. What should be on AMT Code F Line 1? My Review asks for an entry (suggests the number from Ln 19-Type A Distribution) into AMT Code F Line 1. I have no entry for Ln 17?

TTax seems to want me to enter the amount from Line 19, a Type A Distribution, into the AMT section. This came up during my Review. I have not entries on mt 1065 for Line 17. I do not expect that a Distribution should be included for calculating AMT. It is not a gain, just partial return of my principle. Should I enter this number as the Review requests?

BACKGROUND:

I have an S corp, I'm the only shareholder and employee, and I use cash accounting:

In 2019 I paid for some business expenses on my personal credit card (e.g. misc. supplies and equipment) and the company will reimburse me in 2020.

QUESTION:

When I do the business taxes (1120S), can I deduct these expenses on the 2019 return or do I need to wait and deduct them on the 2020 return?

My guess is that I can't deduct on 2019 return since I'm using cash accounting and the company didn't actually incur the cost until 2020 when the reimbursement happened; however, I'm asking the question because on a previous years return, where I had H&R block do my return, the same situation arose and they deducted it in the year the items were purchased rather than the year the reimbursement was made. Then they carried the reimbursement forward to the next year's liability on the balance sheet. Again, since I'm using cash accounting, I'm wondering if this is ok to do.

Thanks for the help.

Mark

Hello

I own an annuity that has an individual retirement annuity rider on it. It says that "It amends such annuity so that it may be issued as an Individual Retirement Annuity under Section 408 (b) of the IRS Cof of 1986....." My question is does this sound like it is an IRA and I can write my payments as a deduction on my taxes?

Why didn't Turbotax generate a schedule 1 even though I entered a state tax refund?

I entered a large state tax refund from 2017 into my 2018 Turbotax online, in the State Tax Refund field. The Schedule 1 was not created and the tax refund was not added to my income. I itemized my deductions in 2017 and 2018. Please explain why the Schedule 1 was not created and the income was not added on the 1040.

Hi - I'm Mike Wick from Texas. I have a credit card account with Target. On this month's statement Target lowered my credit limit from $2000.00 to $1000.00. I haven't charged my Target card since FEB 2020, while maintaining a zero balance. The next day I received alerts from the big 3 scoring services that my FICO score had decreased by up to 16 points! Question: do the Big 3 consistently drop scores because of a lowered credit limit?

Hi there- I sold my primary residence (purchased 6-1-2005) last October (10-15-2019) for $519,000 and the tax basis is $450,000. I am single and am able to exclude $250,000 of gain yet the program is showing I owe a capital gain of about $9,000. I don't get it. I used a small room for a home office for the 14 years I lived there, is this causing this issue? What am I doing wrong. I know I have to recapture some of the depreciation but a gain of $9,000 does not look correct. Thanks ahead of time for any wisdom. J

Amended Return Format - what should be sent

I have discovered that need to file Amended Returns for 2017, 2018 & 2019. 2017 & 2018 must be paper filings, but it appears I can use TTax for 2019 & file electronically.

Business 2019 Turbotax duplicating employee benefit program deduction on line 7 and line 18

Hello,

Turbotax Business 2019 is duplicating my employee benefit program deduction. It asks for salaries and wages of officers so I put that amount, which I put the adjusted gross pay from my payroll summary. Then it asks for insurance and other benefits, and I put the amount for the other health health insurance and the fringe benefits for officers in those two boxes. It then adds those amounts to my line 7 on the 1120S form, AND it also lists the amount for the employee benefit program in line 18 that I had put in the other health insurance box. It's duplicating it.

I can't figure out how to still get the deduction for everything by entering the amounts in the boxes it wants.

Thank you,

Rachel

I was seeing a federal refund of $1,200 at the top of the page and after clicking on final review, the refund went to $0 stating that it was due to me having no income in 2018. I filed on my own in 2018 not using Turbotax and had similar income in 2018 to 2019. So it does not make sense to me to lose my refund.

How to override or amend Federal SCorp business tax return created using TurboTax 2019 Business software information populating my DC SCorp business state return

District of Columbia D-20 Franchise Tax Return sets a minimum tax due of $250. Taxable DC business income in 2019 was $1455; the calculated tax on this income at a rate of 8.25% was $120; however I was required to pay the $250 minimum. The $130 increase in the tax due equates to taxable income of $2063 ($250/.0825=$2063).

The amount of DC-20 taxable income from the D-20 return is deductible from Gross Income on the D-40 SUB Individual Income Tax Return filed for DC. I want to deduct the $2063 figure from Gross Income on the D-40 return rather than the $1455; however, I cannot override the TurboTax 2019 Individual software which populates the D-40 return. In effect, although I paid franchise tax on $2063 of taxable business income TurboTax will not let me enter this amount on the D-40. IS THERE ANYWAY TO OVERRIDE THIS RESTRICTION?

WHY DOES THIS MATTER?

Because of a $620 over-payment of my 2018 DC franchise tax, I am due a $370 refund on my 2019 D-20 return. However my D-40 individual return for 2019, using the $1455 deduction rather then $2063, shows an amount due with penalty and interest. To avoid the penalty and interest I want to increase the taxable income on my business return, which will decrease by the an equal amount the taxable income and tax due on my individual return. ANY IDEAS?

Hi,

My total salary for the year is ~130K. For about 12 weeks, I switched my address to a NY address because I bought a house there and i was planning to move. However, plans quickly fell apart and I had to move back to NJ and switch my address baclk. Because of this reason, I have 2 states listed (NJ and NY) in section 15.

Section 15 of my W2 however lists my NJ salary at 130K with ~6800 in state income tax and also 130K listed under NY with 0 income tax

Is this W2 incorrect? If not, how should i adjust for this in turbo tax. I do not see any option under NY return wherei can adjust for only 12 weeks of residecy in NY.

All the income was however made in NJ.

How to Record / Report Tax a loan from my LLC to an individual

I have an LLC that is providing a loan to an individual worth $25,000 with 9% interest rate.

I origionally had placed $4,000 into the LLC to start the LLC, and have just transfered $25,000 from my own account to fund the LLC for the loan (which will be going to that individual as the loan).

How should I report the 25k I put into the business? How will this be taxed? Will I pay tax on each payment coming to the LLC as a whole? Will only the interest on the loan be taxed? If I withdrawl any of the principal at a later time from my LLC to myself, will I have to pay any tax on this? I did not want this to be a personal loan from me to the individual, but would a personal loan have made more sense?

Any advice on this scenario would be very helpful.

I recently received a letter from the Comptroller of Maryland saying I owe $4,747 in back taxes from 2018. This includes several late fees as I didn't file until August of this year. I filed using TurboTax's 2018 filing software, and it said I would get a ~$6,000 refund from the State of Md. I didn't expect to get the full refund, but I didn't expect to owe close to $5k either. Does anybody have any idea how this may have happened?

I haven't heard anything from the IRS about any of it. I'm applying for college and they want ny 2018 tax info on whether I filed. I did file, but it was rejected. Honestly, it took so long for it to get processed, that I forgot to keep checking on it. I didn't know it was rejected till a couple weeks ago. Anyways, the college wants to know my filing status for that year. I filed, it was rejected. Should I push to amend??

Stimulus Question

I filed my taxes married filing separate and I chose standard deduction using Turbo Tax which picks that my husband can be claim on someone else’s taxes and he did the same. Now we haven’t received the stimulus check due to choosing this particular deduction. We both made less than $45k and the calculator says we aren’t eligible. Can someone explain this for me please? I tried calling the IRS but the wait time is forever. Thank you 🙏

Co-owner non-occupant capital gains question

In June 2018, I was a co-borrower (also on title) of a home for my mother. I never resided in the home. We did about $12,000 of improvements prior to occupancy. The initial down payment and subsequent expenses were about 60 (mom)/40 (me), but there isn't a paper trail to indicate that split. The mortgage has come out of my bank account. We are under contract to sell the home for approximately $50000 more than we purchased it for. Are there any ways to reduce/avoid paying taxes on my portion of the gain come tax time?

Turbotax 2019 forces me to file state taxes and other unethical practices

Turbotax 2019 online forces one to file state return. Even though I keep selecting "skip state return" and "do not prepare state return", when I try to efile, it again asks to complete the state return. I repeated the whole thing some ten times. Logged out, cleaned all history files, and logged in again, but it keeps doing the same thing. I then selected "file by mail". Same loop started again. I wasted hours and I have still not been able to file my return. I live abroad and I have no requirement to file state taxes. Even if I do, I don't want to file through Turbotax.

Turbotax is the most USER UNFRIENDLY and frustrating tax software!

And as if this was not enough, every time I proceed with the filing, it asks you to sign-up for MAX benefits, although I had opted and paid for it a month ago. I does not check your account to see if you have bought it already. I ended up paying for it twice. Turbotax plays all kinds of tricks to make you pay. How unethical!!!
