Is Turbo Tax covering pension income exclusion under Maryland Hometown heroes Act?

Yes.  To take advantage of the Maryland Hometown Heros Act income exclusion, you must include Form 502SU, Subtractions From Income, when completing your Maryland tax return.  This form will be available in TurboTax on January 26, 2018

The first $15,000 of Retirement Income for first responders and emergency personnel at least 55 years old will not be subject to state tax.  This includes law enforcement officers or fire, rescue, or emergency services personnel (emergency medical technicians and paramedics) of the United States, the State, or a political subdivision of the State.  Beneficiaries are not eligible for this exclusion.

For 2018:  The Hometown Heroes Act of 2018 will expand the previous law to include correctional officers.  Also, the bill will exempt ALL retirement income received from these occupations from state income taxes.

Is Turbo Tax covering pension income exclusion under Maryland Hometown heroes Act?

Yes, according to this, the age has been lowered to 55. It is built into Turbo Tax but disguised. Assuming your former employment was that as a law enforcement officer or fire, rescue, or emergency services personnel of the United States, the State, or a local jurisdiction.

Here is how to access it.

  1. Go to the state taxes tab
  2. As you proceed through the interview, there will be a screen that will appear that says Here is the Income Maryland Handles Differently.
  3. From here go to Retirement
  4. Then go to Retired, Correctional, Law Enforcement, Fire, Rescue employees. See the screenshot below.
