Should I be going from $880 refund to owing $577 just by adding $5892 in early pension payments?

this would mean I'm being taxed 24.7% on my retirement payment.

Yes, probably.  That's also (probably) 14.7% income tax and 10% early (before age 59.5) distribution penalty.
