Why isn't Turbo Tax State (HI) updating the fact that I checked the box for my government pension is qualified and don't pay state tax on it?

I had to go back into the Federal Income section to change the selection to "qualified pension". It should have updated my state return but it didn't.

If returning to the Federal 1040 income tax return did not change the selection to a 'qualified pension', consider removing the pension and re-entering.

In TurboTax, in the Hawaii state income tax return, at the screen Pension Deduction Summary, the Hawaii pension deduction was calculated.  The deduction is reported on the Hawaii form N-11 line 13.

Hawaii Revised Statutes (HRS), states that certain kinds of pensions, whether paid by public or private employers, are not subject to the Hawaii income tax.

Hawaii allows a subtraction for qualifying pension distributions from:

  • Pension or annuity distributions from a public retirement system (such as Federal civil service annuity, military pension, state or county retirement system, and
  • Distributions from a private employer pension plan received upon retirement if the employee did not contribute to the pension plan.
