Why is Turbo Tax using an incorrect number for my RMD?

When answering the RMD questions, an incorrect number may have been entered.

To review and correct the incorrect amount for your RMD, follow the instructions below:.

  1. Go to Wages & income
  2. Scroll to Retirement Plans and Social Security
  3. Select Start  next to IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R)
  4. Select Edit  next to the 1099-R that you need to correct
  5. When you get to the screen “Let's get more information about your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD)?", enter the correct amount of the RMD from this distribution
  6. When you get to the screen “How much of this distribution applied to your December 31, 2025 RMD?”, make your selection.

For more information, please refer to the IRS FAQs Retirement Plan and IRA Required Minimum Distributions FAQs.  You can also review the TurboTax articles What is an RMD?

Why is Turbo Tax using an incorrect number for my RMD?

Cannot access Step 5. The correct amount is already listed. But TurboTax thibks I did not take the RMD, which I listed as a QCD.

Why is Turbo Tax using an incorrect number for my RMD?

It's possible to be able to take a QCD without needing to take an RMD.  If you were born after December 31, 1951, you were not required to take an RMD for 2025 and should not have to fill in an RMD number in TurboTax.  But you do need to be at least 70.5 years old at the time of the QCD in order to make one.  So if you qualified to make a QCD in 2025 but were born in 1952 or later, that would be why you are unable to access the Step 5 listed above.  And in this case, there would be no RMD entry that you need to make.
