Why is the taxable amount on my 1099-R (box 2a on the 1099 and line 4c on the 1040) greater than the taxable amount in line 4d on the 1040?

If you do not have more than one 1099R, you need to go back and review your entries in your return. Make sure all your entries you made match with the physical copy of the 1099R.  Of course, if you have more than one 1099R, 4C will be a total of all 1099R's. Otherwise, make sure 4C matches the gross distribution amount in line 1 of the 1099R and that 2A matches with 4D.
