I am having the same problem.   There is nothing in Box 3.   The 1099-R is from a pension annuity.  I believe that   Turbo Tax’s prompt is looking for a value prior to the distribution but I never contributed to the pension.  No value is deducted with each payment.  My company guarantees the amount for each month that I survive

You should leave box 3 blank on the Form 1099-R.  If the program is requiring an entry in box 3, delete the Form 1099-R and re-enter manually.  That will clear the program error.

We'd love to help you complete your tax return, but need more information. Can you please clarify your question?

I understand that you are having an issue with Box 3 of your 1099-R.

  • Is there an entry in Box 3
  • Does the Box 3 heading say "Capital Gain (Included in Box 2a)"
  • If there is no entry, try to enter "0" in Box 3.

I know this probably doesn't completely answer your question.  Please contact us again and provide some additional details.
