Why are my contributions not reflected on my W2 (no value for box 12w)?

I contributed $2400 to my HSA in 2016, my employer does not add any contributions. There is no value for box 12w on my W2. On my Turbotax form 8889, box 2 is $0. How do I enter my contributions for this HSA?

If your contributions were made through pre-tax payroll deductions, they should be reported on your W-2 in Box 12 with Code W.  If this is your situation and the amount was not reported on your W-2, then you need to request a corrected W-2 from your employer.  This would be the case whether or not your employer added any additional money to the account over and above the amount you contributed from your paychecks.

On the other hand, if you made contributions to the account outside of payroll deductions using after tax money, those contributions are entered into your return as you go through the Health Savings Account (HSA) section.

Use these steps to go to the HSA section:

    • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)

    • This opens a box where you can type in “hsa” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here) and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)

    • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to hsa

    • Click on the blue “Jump to hsa” link and enter your information
