Where does the info on line 1b of the Form 1040 line 6 Social security benefits worksheet come from?

This image is empty.  I have searched my return pretty thoroughly and everything says I live in the US 100% of the time.   Why is there a value in this field.?

1B -  Benefits exemption from U.S. Tax due to living abroad in country with Tax Treaty

This was an empty field in my 2023 return but in the 2024 return I am starting to work on it has like $46K in it.

It is possible that you indicated that you lived in a foreign country when you entered your social security benefits. You will see a screen that says Is (name of taxpayer) a U.S. citizen living abroad in one of these countries? after you enter your Form SSA-1099 in TurboTax:

If you check the "Yes" box your benefits will show as not taxable on line 1(b) of the Social Security Benefits worksheet.

Pennies from heaven?

Same thing happened to me. I had completed the SS benefits worksheet before found in the 1040 instructions pdf, p. 32, and after I had entered my info into TurboTax, it was calculating the taxable SS benefits much lower that noticed on the 1040, line 6b. When I switched from Step-by-Step mode to Forms in TurboTax, I located the "Social Sec" benefits worksheet and opened it, and found that the box for my spouse was checked as being a US citizen residing in one of the listed countries. WRONG! After I unchecked it, my return changed from getting a refund to owing big time, which I had expected!! If I wasn't so inquisitive, I would have had one of those 85,000 new agents knocking at my door!!! and I don't think an excuse of "TurboTax made me do it" would fly.
