A new, temporary additional deduction of $6,000 for those aged 65 and older (or $12,000 for a married couple if both qualify) is available for tax years 2025 through 2028. The deduction begins to phase out at income greater than $75,000 and $150,000 if you’re married filing jointly. This is in addition to the standard deduction or itemized deductions.
The senior deduction is automatically calculated by TurboTax based on the dates of birth you entered for each spouse.
The senior additional deduction appears on line 37 of Schedule 1-A, then included in line 13b of your form 1040.
It is automatic based on your age. It is not part of your Standard Deduction. The new Senior Deduction is separate and in addition to the Standard Deduction or your Itemized Deductions on 1040 line 12e. The 6,000/12,000 senior deduction will be calculated on 1040 Schedule 1-A page 2 Part V Enhanced Deduction for Seniors which goes to 1040 line 13b with any other Sch 1-A deductions.
Turbo Tax automatically includes it if you qualify. If you are married you have to file a Joint return.
