The proper way to report the recharacterization and earnings which is to enter the 2020 IRA contribution in the IRA contribution interview section and then say yes to "Did you switch from a Roth to a Traditional IRA - recharacterize".
The amount The amount of the original Roth contribution must be entered - not any earnings or losses.
Then TurboTax will ask for an explanation statement where it should be stated that the original $xxx.xx plus $xxx.xx earnings (or loss) were recharactorized.
There is no tax or penalty on the before-tax earnings since the earning were simply switched into the recharactorized account.
There are two choices - rollover or combination of things. choose combination of things and then enter the converted amount in the bottom box.
It's not clear why the developers removed the "converted all" option, perhaps it was inadvertent, but macuser_22 provided the workaround where you indicate that you did a combination and then enter in the conversion box the full gross amount.
I have reported this to the moderators. It is being forwarded to the developers.
The 2019 interview had separate questions for a rollover, conversion, or combination of things.
The 2020 interview only has two choices, rollover or combination of things.
That confused many that DID NOT do a combination or things (they only did a single thing - convert to a Roth). They do not realize that they must choose "combination" in order to enter the single thing "convert".
The question with "COMBINATION" needs to be reworded because users just stop there - the question does not make sense to their situation.
(This appears to be developers trying to simply the software without changing the interview question so that it makes sense. The software works fine - if the user can figure out how to use it.)
