The 5329 reports additional taxes on

• IRAs,

• Other qualified retirement plans,

• Modified endowment contracts,

• Coverdell ESAs,

• QTPs,

• Archer MSAs,

• HSAs, or

• ABLE accounts

whether there are current year excesses or carryovers or whatever.

Do you happen to be using the Desktop TurboTax product? If so, can you tell us which section the numbers on the 5329 are in (Parts 1 to 8)?

2025 5329 Parts 1-3 are blank.  Only part 4 has values on lines 18, 22, 24 and 25.

Late 2023 and January 2024 I incorrectly contributed to a Roth, which I backed out in February prior to filing 2024.   Same for my wife.   Our 2024 return has 5329 forms for both of us with a penalty.  Turbotax only generated a 5329 form for myself, not my wife in 2025.   The only difference I can identify is that I did have a pre-existing Roth account and she had never had one before.   My guess is that either I entered something incorrect on the 2024 return or Turbotax has picked up some incorrect information.   2024 I used the PC based product.  This year I accepted the offer to use the online version.   Unrelated, but this years return thinks that I didn't efile with turbotax last year though I did.

A 5329 often carries over on the return because the penalties and amounts often carry over.  In your case there should be no values carried forward on the form.  However, based on the lines that you say have numbers in them, the system does not think that you pulled out the excess contributions in 2024.  You'll need to check your 2024 return and make certain that you have removed the excess contributions made last year and then the amount won't roll forward into 2025.

In order to do this you will have to access your 2024 return which is on the desktop software.  Once you have done this go through the IRA section and make certain that the amount of excess contributions was entered as "removed before the due date of the return".  That should solve the problem.

I have this same situation. I went back to 2024 on desktop. Made sure excess contribution was 0. saved, reopened 2025 (on desktop).  Form 5329 still there. Deleted it. It Came back. Cannot remove the amount on excess contribution!!!

HOW DO I GET RID OF THE EXCESS CONTRIBUTION AMOUNT?

Thanks!

Try these to see if these will work.

1. Check the "Carryover" Worksheets

  1. Deleting Form 5329 directly rarely works because the software is pulling the data from a hidden worksheet.
  2. Go to Forms Mode (top right on Desktop versions).
  3. Look for a document titled IRA Contribution Worksheet or Retirement Plan Carryover Worksheet.
  4. Search for a line item labeled "Excess contributions from prior years" or "2024 excess contribution."
  5. If there is a value there, manually change it to 0 on that worksheet rather than trying to delete the 5329 form itself.

2. Use the "Step-by-Step" Interview (The "Clean Sweep" Method)

Sometimes the software needs a manual "No" to overwrite the imported data. Follow this path:

  1. Navigate to Federal > Deductions & Credits.
  2. Find Retirement and Investments > Traditional and Roth IRA Contributions.
  3. Even if you didn't contribute in 2025, click Start/Revisit
  4. Select the type of IRA you had the issue with (usually Roth).

Proceed through the screens until you reach a question that asks: "Did you have any excess contributions before 2025?"

Even if it shows a number, toggle it to Yes, then on the following screen, ensure the "Total Excess Contributions for 2024" is set to $0.

3. The "Delete and Rebuild" (Last Resort)

If the form keeps regenerating, it’s likely because there is a 1099-R or a specific "Information Worksheet" flagging it.

  1. Go to the forms mode. Delete Form 5329 and any associated IRA Contribution Worksheets.
  2. Immediately Save and Exit: Close the program entirely and reopen it.
  3. Re-enter IRA Info: Go back through the "Deductions & Credits" section for IRAs. By starting the section fresh without the old worksheet attached, the software should stop assuming there’s a carryover.
