What if I already have an ira but I didn't contribute?
Contributions to your retirement account, like an IRA or Roth IRA, are optional. TurboTax prompts you to answer whether you own and contributed to an IRA. Frist, check the box for the type(s) of IRA you own and click Continue. Then select No since you did not contribute.
Remember, you can contribute to your IRA (or Roth) until April 17, 2018, and your contribution will count toward your 2017 taxes. If you decide to do so, select Yes, you did contribute.
Did you know you may be eligible for a tax credit for putting money in a retirement plan? Click this TurboTax article What Is the Savers Credit? for more details.
