What does the question "did Cathy inherit the IRA from Merril Lynch as custodian" mean?

My wife took an IRA distribution just after she turned 59 1/2.   I don't know the meaning of custodian as applies to the IRA and how it would be inherited from the broker.

TurboTax is asking if the IRA held by Merril Lynch as custodian is an inherited IRA.  If it's her own IRA, the answer is No.  The answer is Yes only if the IRA is someone else's IRA that she inherited as beneficiary.
