We have a 1099-R. I've entered the info but it only asks if the money was rolled into a Roth IRA. It was rolled into a traditional IRA but I don't see any way to record

Entered the Code G in box 7.

The program asks if your rolled into a Roth IRA, because if you rolled a traditional IRA (or pre-tax employer retirement plans) into a Roth IRA, then you would be taxed on the amount that you previously received a tax benefit.

If you entered your 1099-R form and rolled a traditional to traditional IRA, you good to go. To verify that the form is reflected properly on your return:

  • Select My Account
  • Tools
  • View Tax Summary from the blue links
  • Preview my 1040 in white space under My Account
  • Scroll to line 16 a and b
  • Total distribution should be listed on line 16a, the word ROLLOVER listed in 16b and 0 carried to the right of the word.

Just answer NO - it was not rolled into a Roth.   There is no need to ask about a Traditional IRA since that is the only other possibility if not a Roth it is automatically a Traditional IRA.

Answering NO - causes the amount to be TAXED - which is WRONG!

Why do you think it is wrong.   A code G rolled/converted to a Roth will almost always be taxable.

but it was not rolled into a ROTH.. I am having the same issue. Getting taxed on a rollover account where the destination account was a Qualified Plan, but not a ROTH. It only asks if it was rolled into a Roth IRA and nothing else.

@suzanne  - If it was NOT rolled to a Roth then as I said above, say NO to both Roth questions with a code G 1099-R.  It does not need to ask anything else  since it can ONLY be a Traditional IRA if not a Roth.

thank you..and when we answer no to the Roth question, we are taxed on the rollover amount.

Where do you see that.   The taxable amount would be on line 16b on the 1040 form (12b on 1040A) which should be zero or blank for a code G.   What in on line 16b on yiur 1040 form?
