Was advised in 2016 I didn't have to file because we had Social Security income only. Correct or misled?

That is correct.

If the social security income is your ONLY income received during 2017, you do not need to file.

If you receive other types of income along with the social security benefit, you would need to file if meet the filing requirement. See 2017 Filing Requirements
