My 1098 does not show mortgage principal balance as of 1/1/19, only shows it as of 1/1/18. This question was not on Turbo Tax for prior years. Is this an error?

This is not an error.  You will need to determine what your balance was as of 1/1/2019. This information can be found on your monthly mortgage statements from your lender.  This is a new question after the tax law changes this year.
