Why is Turbo Tax questioning my 1099-R having an amount in box 1 but not in box 2A?

I rolled over a 401k from a previous employer to my current employer's 401k. This resulted in a 1099-R with an amount in box 1, $0 in box 2a and "total distribution" check in 2b. Turbo Tax is stating this doesn't look right and has me confirm this information repeatedly.

Since I was not taxed on the distribution, qualifying plan to qualifying plan, where is the problem?

Why is Turbo Tax questioning my 1099-R having an amount in box 1 but not in box 2A?

There's no issue. The small boxes next to Box 2 a and b are easily missed on the 1099-Form. TurboTax is just clarifying that these boxes have not been overlooked, as the outcome would be affected.

If you entered your plan to plan rollover exactly as reported on your 1099-R, your done with the form. Continue with the interview.

To verify that the form is reflected properly on your return:

  • Select My Account
  • Tools
  • View Tax Summary from the blue links
  • Preview my 1040 in white space under My Account
  • Scroll to line 16 a and b

Total distribution should be listed on line 16a, the word ROLLOVER listed in 16b and 0 carried to the right of the word.
