Yes, you need to file a GA state tax return if you want to recover the taxes that you paid to that state. Here is a TurboTax article about figuring out what is owed to you when you pay taxes to multiple states.
A Georgia nonresident, who receives deferred compensation that was earned in Georgia in a prior year is required to pay tax on the income, but only if the prior year’s income exceeds the lesser of: 1) 5 percent of the income received by the person in all places during the current taxable year; or 2) $5,000.
Thank you. For clarification, I have paid tax on the deferred comp revenue in GA and in CA. I have only resided in CA in 2020 and I will file a state tax return for 2020 in CA. My question is whether I also need to file a state return in GA as well, as a result of receiving this W2 for GA which shows the taxes paid in GA.
I just received a note asking if my inquiry has been resolved. To this point I have not received a response to my clarifying question asked on Monday. Please provide the answer to that question. Thank you.
