There may be several reasons why. Actually, we don't have access to your return and we cannot give you a precise answer. You may request a line by line review with one of our Tax Experts. Follow this link to find out more: Line By Line Review

Did you claim any children as dependents on your return?  It is possible you have earned income credit or some child tax credit that is giving you that refund.

Look at your 2019 Form 1040 to see the child-related credits you received

Not to ignore another "ought to be obvious possibility"   --did you check all of your data entries and make sure you did not mess up by adding any extra zeros to the tax withheld from your W-2 or misplace a decimal point somewhere?  The comma and decimal are next to each other on the keyboard so it is easy to hit the wrong key.

@Statefan003 Well the only thing you can do is provide the IRS with truthful information about the child your claimed as a dependent.  if you are truly supporting your niece then own up to the mistake in the software and then provide proof that you are supporting the child.  Whatever proof they want.

Yes I have proof of everything, I'm totally legit. I just don't know where to go from here or take the next steps. I'm laid off now and our bills are going to be due soon.

They want proof she is my daughter but she is not my daughter, so I'm confused on what to do next

Is there a phone number on the letter?  Call them to see what else if anything you need to send them.

It's pretty simple -

Respond to the IRS notice in writing.

Explain that you selected the wrong relationship - that it should be niece, not daughter.

If you have proof of support, include it. Otherwise expect IRS to come back again and ask for it.

Expect that your full  refund will be delayed for a considerable period of time.

If you're lucky you'll get a partial refund right away.
