RMD for three IRA accounts

TurboTax desktop is treating my IRA as separate from the IRAs for my wife and her inherited IRA. The total distribution for the 3 IRAs is larger than the RMD for the 3, i.e., I have met the RMD requirement.

For my IRA, the program generates a 5329-T and calculates a penalty. The RMD for this account is larger than what I withdrew.

For the two spouse IRAs, the program groups the two and says no penalty. The withdrawals add up to more that the RMD to cover my IRA.

If I check "spouse" for my IRA, the program says I have met the IRA requirement.  How do I get the correct result? (I filled in the 1099-R forms and do not use EasyStep.)

RMD for three IRA accounts

Sorry, Yes your IRA and her IRA are separate.  IRA means Individual Retirement account.    If you didn’t take enough RMD from your account you owe a penalty.  You can’t combine your RMD with hers.

Thanks. I think I was mislead by both the IRS and Vanguard due to ambiguous use of “multiple IRSs”

TURBOTax for 2023 combined the three accounts with no penalty, so my guess is that they were also mislead.

For 2023 you might have entered all the 1099Rs under the same person.  Or how old are both of you?  Maybe in 2023 you or she didn't have a RMD requirement.
