What are the tax implications of repaying a bonus within the same tax year?

I received a $40k promotion bonus in January and will be quitting in June. I will be required to repay the bonus. Will my company require me to pay back the full $40k? Or just the after-tax amount of $25k? If I have to repay the full $40k, how does this affect my W-2 and other tax implications?

Ask the employer how they will handle it ... until you know that it is impossible to explain what to do on the 2020 return.
