If they withheld for the wrong state then you can file a Non-Resident return for that state for it to be refunded. You can also ask the administrator to change it to the correct state going forward.
I suggest you begin with fresh data imported from the federal return.
- First, please check My Info in the Federal return and be sure the box is checked for Made money in another state (because of the withholding)
- Then go to the States section and click on the delete trashcan icon for your state
- Then, add Non-Resident state first, and be sure it says Non-Resident state, and complete it
- It will show your federal income and ask you to allocate what is sourced in that state, you will say 0
- Next, add your Resident state and be sure it says Resident state
- It will show your federal income and ask you to allocate what is sourced in that state, and you can select all
This should prompt the allocation of income in both returns. The incorrect state on your Form 1099-R should give you a full refund and your other state should behave as normally.
