After you have entered your Form 1099-R into TurboTax exactly as it was reported to you, then click Continue and answer the follow-up questions.

You should see a question that asks 'what did you do with the money'.  You would select that you 'moved it to another retirement account'.

Then, you will select that you 'did a combination of rolling over, converting, or cashing out the money'.  Choose this option so that you can indicate that you converted some of the money to a Roth IRA.  There will be a box to enter the amount that was converted.

Be sure to continue through this section to answer all of the remaining questions so that your taxable amount can be calculated properly.

It did not solve the problem.  Turbo tax still returns me to the last entry.  The question is "Did you convert the gross amount (box1) to a ROTH IRA? options are

Yes all was converted to a roth ira

no, I converted less than box 1

I didn't convert any of the money

If I answer No, I converted less than box 1, put in the amounts, and continue Turbo tax returns me with the other two options highlighted in red and msg "this information is required"

I can continue, but have a review indication for this 1099R.

Now what do I do, ignore the review request?  If I do when I get to the end will it block me from filing

thanks

The best thing to do might be to delete the 1099R form and begin again.  Sometimes data gets stuck in a loop.  Here's how to delete the form:

How do I view and delete forms in TurboTax Online?

  • Open or continue your return in TurboTax.
  • In the left menu, select Tax Tools and then Tools.
  • In the pop-up window Tool Center, choose Delete a form.
  • Select Delete next to the form/schedule/worksheet in the list and follow the instructions.

Next follow these steps to report the distribution and conversion.

Here is a TurboTax article about converting to a Roth IRA.
